Default Working on a patrol box for Community Project

Hey there, I'm a year 12 student, and I'm working on a woodworking project for the scouts. Its for my community studies subject and will be year long.

The unit's scout leader has asked me I can build and construct a new patrol box to replace their 13 year old ones

I have experience in woodworking - mainly in my classes at the school workshop - In year 8, I made a spatula and a bowl. Year 10 I built a camp stool, and in Year 11 I finished work on a TV stand that is currently living in our living room.

What I'm using for the design is a american style patrol box. It has a few hinged panels and has many compartments inside of it for the various camp equipment being stored inside.

Here is a picture of the diagram.

I've already used Autodesk inventor to make the individual pieces. Currently their sizes are in inchs so I'll have to fix that.

But basically I'm asking for some guidance and help.

Nice project, I would use 12mm Marine plywood (7 Ply), 1 sheet looks to be enough.

If you can find someone with a table saw it will make your task much easier.

If you need to use a jigsaw, buy the BEST QUALITY BLADES you can, this will minimize splintering, also once you have drawn out the pieces , use a STANLEY KNIFE and score all the lines, this will also assist with splintering on the edges.

A good epoxy glue, or polyurethane glue , will hold everything together, along with s/steel screws,.

for the slots for the compartments, a small router will cut these cleanly, CAUTION, USE A FENCE CLAMPED TO THE PIECE , DO NOT USE THE ROUTER FREE HAND.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

Looks much fancier than the patrol boxes we had!

My 2cents- make it bomb proof, if it gets treated like we used to treat ours, then it will get a beating. (we weren't rough for the fun of it, but when they get loaded up with cooking equipment and food, they become quite heavy to lift in and out of trailers, utes etc and we were only young)

The other thing would be if you could make the sides hinge up instead of down. I've seen a deign where the sides hinge up to form a large table which can then be used either for dining or during the cooking.
