What and miss out on the entertainment????
Your such great medicine.....
I havent had such a laugh in ages....
I'm not going to get caught into iccky sticky debate........ But, I do love making furniture, I make only what is purposeful, useful & required.....extra bonus if it can be made from any recycled wood........ guess I will attemp to make them ( meaning pens) when I cant pick up a larger piece of wood & make something more interesting...........thinking also, there are a few pen's sold by those turners that have financed a trip away or two.....not so silly an idea if you look on it that way...........But hey love the thread....now I think that I will have a Dramburie & just keep reading.........til it''s a reasonable time to go make some more noise & wooddust down the shed..........
KekemoDon't think you're playing it safe by walking in the middle of the road.....that's the surest way to get hit by traffic coming from both ways!
I'm passionate about woodwork.......making Sawdust again & loving it!

I are right beside yourself, I have turned pens and after a few, what is left? Different woods Different colors, but a pen is a pen is a pen is a pen. I have a great respect for the fellows who do enjoy the pen turning addiction, I for one can admire but not relate.
Some revere the Hollow Form and that only as their opus. Another segment believe the Natural edge is the classic form, and from those we see endless trails of bark edged bowls. Boxes and lidded bowls sometimes overwhelm us with pictures and endless gloating over some exotic wood. This in combination with all turners is what I relish from my hours of enjoyment reading posts, examining pictures, and escaping from daily doldrum. That is what makes turning such universal experience. There are so many different and exciting things to explore standing in front of a lathe. Be it turning 4 exact matching legs to a table (free hand) or perhaps 8 for a set, and following a plan to exact measurement. Or, perhaps to chuck up a piece and see what results after playing with the chisels and skew.
I would hate to think that I had the only true experience on the lathe as well as other aspects of wood working craft. Some folks get stuck in a procedure and seem to loose sight of the many variations that are available. Just this week I turned a lid to a Butter Churn Crock and the dasher as well. Perhaps never again will I do so, but I did and that is one lathe experience in the many others I have amassed over the years and remember nearly all my turnings as a pleasure from start to finish.
Is there a point here somewhere? I don't know, you sparked a Blog and hit on an agrovation I too have felt from time to time but I keep remembering that each of us are different and have different preferences but we all love the same thing, wood turning. Keep the pictures coming.

Personally, turning's not my thing unless it's to make parts for something else. I admire people who can make a nice pen, but could imagine nothing more boring than churning them out.
But fortunately, we're all different.
Pen threads are like the Friday thread. If you don't like 'em, don't read 'em.
