    Question planer/jointer?

Could somebody please enlighten me about the difference between a jointer and a planer. Also in a prevoius thread somebody mentioned the Sherwood PT-260 and the ML-392.
Is there anybody out there who has had experince with either of these and if so could they give me the pro's and con's
As am contemplating the purchase of one of the above.

Bought an ML-392 and although I haven't given it a real workout it seems to be put together well and does a good job. I put a piece of 8" wide red gum across it and it handled it quite nicely. It's easy enough to use and for me, where space is at a premium, is a good machine.

I intend to do a full review when I get a chance, but in brief,, positive feelings.

As far as I understand, in Australia we call the machines planer and thicknesser.

In the US they call the planer, jointer and the thicknesser, planer.

If you say jointer / planer I would think you are talking about a combination machine using the US expression.

I like thicknesser better, there is no way to confuse the term since it is descriptive of the task, and the same applies to the planer.

Jointer sounds like it is a machine to join something, may be we should call the bisquit cutter a jointer, that would make more sense.

Thanks AlexS, will wait for your review on the ML 392. I was wondering why the PT 260 had a 3hp motor and a 2 blade cutter and the ML392 a 1 1/2 hp motor and a 3 blade cutter
, also thanks Marc I think you are right about the jointer/planer confusion.

In Oz the planer is also commonly known as a buzzer.

As Sunshine said some time ago: Why don't they call a thicknesses a thinnesser? It purpose is to make the wood thinner.... not thicker!

By the way, where is our little ray of Sunshine??? Is she lurking in the background waiting to pounce or has she done a Knuckles and disappeared from the face of the earth??

    Thumbs up

I purchased the ML-392 from Carbatec a couple of months ago. The original fence had a twist. I sent it back and they replaced it (It took a little while). The machine took a little adjusting to get everything nice and flat and square, but it is now running like a dream.
