My first project was a model reindeer made out of 4" nails and pine cones. I found it quite difficult to get the nails to penetrate the pine cones so I used dad's brace and bits. I held the pine cones between my knees and on about the third hole the bit slipped and pierced a couple of inches into my upper thigh so after a belting from dad, it was off to hospital for a tetanus shot. BTW I was 6 years old at the time.

    TOUGH LOVE BOB!!!!!!!!!!
By the actions of your father, is any wonder you ended up an Axe Murderer.

One thing though, I'll bet you never used a brace and bit with your legs as a vice again
    Just do it!

    Kind regards Rod

One of my early projects was a drying rack based on plans in a book. I cut the tennons (both of them) by hand. (Have not really used tennon and mortice joints since.) The rack has about seven dowel rods and it was difficult to get them all in the holes. The finished item is not quite square.
Twenty plus years latter the rack is still under our bathroom bench and still sees the occasional use.
Other early projects were toy steam engine (son pushed it across the room when learning to walk), rocking swan (has been used by three families) and wooden wagon (ended up making four of them).

My first project was a scaled down Welsh Dresser. So I made one to hold her childhood Dolls Tea Service. She loved it and it still sits downstairs today.

My first project was a stand for the microwave. 2 squares made from lap jointed pine, with a melamine shelf. All class...

Needless to say, it didn't survive the years.

My first 'real' woodworking project features in my avatar, and the wip is here: https://www.woodworkforums.com/f11/ha...le-wip-128131/

Before that I'd done plenty of DIY stuff - kids tables and play stuff, garden and chook stuff, etc but this was the first one with solid timber and proper joints.
    Cheers, Richard
