    Default Recycled Jarrah Sleepers

    Hi

I bought a 2.4 metre by 200mm * 50 mm recycled jarrah railway sleeper today.

My questions are, would it be good enough to make furniture from and would it have been treated with anything?

Could it be used to make cutting boards from etc?

Sooooooooooooo much cheaper than buying dressed timber from Bunnings etc

Forgot to mention that I bought it from Bunnings.

    Exclamation

Arry if it is a fair dinkum Railway sleeper it is likely to have lots of grit embedded in it, therefore it will be a tool terrorist.

Mate if I were you here's what I'd do. Get hold of a metal detector and check the sleeper for embedded nails or anything else. Then grab your handy belt sander and throw on the meanest grit you can. Have at the sleeper till you're sure you've got rid of the worst of the outer layer. Then send it through your normal dimensioning routine. At least this way the belt takes most of the abuse that piece of wood and the crud embedded in it is likely going to hand out.

    Hey Arry,

2.4 long 200 wide by 50 ?? sounds like a decking board off a jetty, not a sleeper.

as above, I would spend a fair bit of time with a belt sander before it got close to my good gear. and do all faces.

    Thanks guys

Yeah, bought it at Bunnings last night and it looks in good condition.
Looks as good as the raw stuff that I bought and paid $150 from a timber supplier last month.

Doesn't actually look like a sleeper?

Yeah it is 2.4 metres long * 200 mm wide by 50mm deep.

Heavy as hell, drove home with it hanging out of my front window lol !

As HazzaB said it is the wrong size for a sleeper they used to be treated with sump oil or creasote, I think you will smell it once you start sanding etc, they may have trimmed to make it look nicer

Maybe it was what was left after they took off the cracked and scungy timber from the outside of a jarrah sleeper?
