Rust on a brand new saw blade - return?
Received this blade in the post from Carbatec today and before I blow my stack, wanted to make sure that this is not normal and that I should contact them for a replacement.
The rust is not light and does not "dust" away rubbing with a dry finger. No doubt I could scrub it off but I'm reluctant to accept something new that is, as far as I'm concerned, faulted.
The other side of the blade seems ok, but still...

They are finger prints from someone handling the blade sometime in the past. I personally wouldn't be too worried about it. Just polish it off with very fine sand paper. I would let them know about it, you may get a credit? I don't know.

I would think that they should have at least offered a discount.

It is a CMT blade and not some cheap knock-off.
I would definitely contact CarbaTec and report the problem. They should offer a replacement or if you don't mind keeping it - some kind of discount or credit.
It will, after all, lose all this rust on the first pass through some timber anyway.
Still, new means new, not damaged in any way including rust.
Cheers

I've sent Carbatec a polite email with some new photos showing all the marked areas. Upon closer inspection both sides have rust spots and patches and there are some large blotchy outlines indicating there has been condensation between the blade and its' plastic wrap. Just have to wait and see what they come back with I guess.
It's frustrating and disappointing after spending literally hours pouring over blade reviews and pics of cuts, comparing prices, value, carbides, kerfs and plate size so I don't have to fiddle with riving knives and ZCIs yadda, yadda, yadda as it's not often that I can afford "nice" things, so when I buy them I want to be confident that the money has been well spent.
Ahh well. These things happen. No reason to get too worked up just yet

We do expect things to be perfect and I am sure if you ring Carba-tec, they will gladly replace the blade but I guess you have to wear the cost of returning the blade you have to them. Personally, I don't think the rust in question is going to effect the performance of the blade but if you want one that is perfect, I dont think you have much choice but to return it and ask for a replacement.
Carba-tec are pretty good with replacing stuff I am sure they will come to the party in some way to keep you happy. As suggested, maybe a discount on the purchase and give you a credit on your account.Reality is no background music.
Cheers John

Not good enough really - you buy a new blade you expect a new blade - rust is not an optional accessory unless you buy a Holden.

Only ever bought 2 [I'm a slow learner] - Torana and SLE Commodore - both brand spanking new. Both were kept not much longer than the so called warranty even though they were bought some 10 years apart.
The book on the problems/faults could only be conservatively be described as a tome

Yep, write to them and see what they come back with. After that I would be pushing for them to send out a new rust-free blade, a refund, or a discount.
You paid for something new, so expect something new.
Carbatec have been good with me in the past. I bought one of those flush saw blades once which snapped on first use. They sent me out a replacement without any issues.
Cheers,
Af.

I sent an email after close on Friday night and it's been four trading days without a response. I'll be nice and give them until this Friday to respond then give them a call in the early afternoon if I still haven't heard from them. Bit disappointed.

Don't hold your breath, I get no reply from them either and I don't get phone calls returned as well. I've deceided to not deal with them unless I have to. This has driven me to do more purchase on the net and not support my local Carba-Tec and all this poor service in times that retailers are complaining we are buying overseas on the net.
