    Default Sam Maloof Foundation

Has anybody here been to Sam Maloof's house and workshops? I'm going to LA in Feb and will be trying my best to make it here to have a visit. The plan for the trip is to find and buy a car and I am only in the US for a week to do just that but would hope I do not miss this opportunity to visit the Foundation.

I'm wondering just how much time I should set aside for the visit?

Here's the link for those who haven't seen it.

Hi Ashcook, have you seen the article in the latest AWR magazine? Sounds like it would be well worth a look

    Hi 3 toed sloth,

You bet, got my copy in the mail I was keen to see his place quite some time ago after I saw his documentary. This issues article has only made me even more keen to get there. Just so happened that I had already purchased my flights about the same time the latest AWR was released.

I'll be sure to post any photo's I can get, Claw Hama.I know your not allowed to take any inside though.

Back in Aus now and did get to go to the Maloof residence. We got there and it was a pretty cold morning. We walked in and found out that all we could do is walk around the gardens and come back in 5 hours time for a guided tour through the house. We couldn't so just accepted a look around.

About 10 minutes later one of the ladies that worked there came up to us and asked where we were from and if we were woodworkers. We said yep and we're from Aus. She was quite surprised and said well you can't come all this way and not look at anything and said for $15 each we could join a school group that was there and go for the guided tour.

We didn't hesitate at that offer and quickly joined the group. There was a 10 minute talk to the kids in the building used for art shows. Then we were split into 4 smaller groups so it was easier to walk through the house. We were standing at the back so we were in the first group We were then told that not only would we go through the house but we were also going to get a walk through the workshop. This apparently is never allowed but for some reason they were going to do it today Dad and I were stoked, this started off with nothing but a garden walk and ended up with the whole lot.

The house was amazing, pure and simple awe inspiring! You've all seen pictures but we all know pictures don't do anything justice. Everywhere and anywhere you could see personal touches. It was fantastic. Even the singing bricks!

The workshop wasn't huge but still a lot bigger then mine. And there were templates and timber everywhere. The machinery was all large and well looked after but at the end of the workshop were two of the four guys working there, working on a reproduction of a 1950's piece Sam had made. We were at the back of the group and after everyone had left Dad got talking to them. As per usual, Dad asked a million questions but they were happy to have a chat. They then asked us to put our contact details down in his book one of them kept so that was pretty cool too.

I only got one photo as there was a specific room to lock them in while you went on the tour. I still had mine with me but never got a sneaky one off as the group was too small and I hadn't turned the sound off on the camera.

I wound up buying a book, two DVD's and a shirt. It was well worth the trip, if you can do it, make sure you make the drive out there. Just line up a right time to get a tour, don't just rock up like we did
