Default Sand Pit Build - With The Kids

With three kids the old clam shell sand pit just wasn't cutting it. Too small and no more sand.

So we got in 1.5 M3 of sand

If that was anything to go by seems we dont need the timber frame.

Now once upon a time I could post pics inline. Not sure if this is working anymore20170603_134718.jpg

Ok so we are using gal corner posts as used for retaining walls. These come from Bunnings.

The sleepers are 150 x 50 treated pine. One set of sides are being used full length. The other is trimmed. This is incase we cap the top with a sleeper in flat

Now it is all laid out and one side placed together. One source recommends a sand pit be 500mm deep. This one will ne about 300mm. Hopefully this is temporary and they will get a better one in a year

Places near the trees this will be a great play centre for the kids and any friends that visit

First side stood up and yes the kids are helping hold in place and screw together. These corner posts are longer than needed and will not be concreted.

One side in and now Tommy is helping line the corner post on a second side

Tyler is using the impact driver to screw the top sleeper in place. This is the first time he has put a screw in completely unassisted

Now to pull the bottom sleeper up. Tommy is on hand to tighten the clamp and then Tyler can screw it in place

One end done and now off to the other

Once all the side are done time to teach the boys how to sqaure things up

The boys worked together quite well here. Once nothe measurements wwre the same it was time to sink it in place. Using a crow bar the ground was softened under the corner posts and with a tap of a heavy hammer it will drop in place.

Last year this was extremely fertile ground for stinging nettles. Figured the kids would not want to be digging these up so we loned the base with plastic

Now the easy job ... fill with sand. Internal measures about 2.4 x 2.35 x 0.3

    Have fun kids

Something they all got involved with

But I could see this would be a long process

What netter thing than start using it as dad pushes a wheel barrow

Tyler tells me shovelling is hard work

    Very hard

    Nice work Dave and crew.
Can I suggest a cover of some description. Cats love a giant litter box and it helps keep leaves and stuff out.
Maybe a shade mesh covered frame, hinged with a couple of bonnet struts to assist lifting.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

Great work Dave. The kids always love helping on things like this as it is different to the normal play and you're using it to help educate along the way. I can see the fun police complaining about Tommy's safety boots
Is the build going to be your first on the new Youtube channel?

Top marks Dave, getting the kids involved in there sandpit....
A heavy piece of shade cloth on a hinged frame could work to keep the leaves & cats out....
