Default Sea chest present for wedding?

Okay following on from this thread Sams thoughts got my own going!

So Im aiming at a sea chest type box... about 4ft long x 2ft wide... the base box will be Jarrah with Oregon uprights in the corners the top will be curved at the ends and two quilted and padded seat cushions inserted on the top... or possibly make the seats a hidden thing under the actual lid? thus when not in use as a seat in the nook the top (arched part) comes down and its a sea chest again... mmm incorporate a couple of glass holders for their evening drinkies?

This seems to have the requirements (other than the veneering but Im okay with that time is at a premium) as they have been looking at house designs that incorporate a bay window in the parents bedroom so at about 18in - 2ft high should fit damned near perfect...

So Im sorta after a plan of one... or at least some measurements that I can work from... anyone have a clue where Id get some? Sea chests are not exactly a common item around here

    Hi Shane

I know you want something right away, but the best suggestion I have is to look for a book called "Treasure Chests - the legacy of extraordinary boxes" by Lon Schlonning (published by Taunton in 2003). It has a good chapter on seachests and has details on several classic examples. It's a common book - many libraries have it.

    I hope this helps.

Cheers Tony... I'll head to the library Monday and see how long it will take for them to get one in... never seem to have any of the books I want in there very little by way of fictional seafarin stuff even less of non fiction stories how tos very little of anything and usually a month or more wait... actually come to think on that Im STILL waiting on one book I ordered in last year!! Betcha they have forgotten it just like I had

Anyway will see what I can drum up!!

Shane, there are some good chest plans around, but to be very honest, I've got the Treasure Chest book Tony mentioned and it is SUPERB!!! Bugger the Library. Buy it instead. It is a coffee table book, not one plan in sight, but it's got some really good pictures and the stories to go with it.

    Cheers
    Wendy
