Sharpening a cabinet scraper
I recently purchased a Veritas cabinet scraper. I've read several pages on the internet, magazines and even the instructions that came with the thing. Anyone have a good tip or secret to sharpening these things???? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Gidday,
I have a video on sharpening card scrapers. If you have Msn Messenger PM me & I'll transfer you the file. I might be wrong on this one cause I have never sharpened a cabinate scraper myself...................but I believe the process is the same...............I'll be away until the 10th.........if interested PM me then.

For card scrapers you just need a file and a burnisher - although again Lee Valley have some gadgets to help with this.
Cheers!

9fingers...I have a Veritas burnishing jig but I dont use it dont know why I just prefer dressing up my scrapers manually.....(a Dark Side thing I guess). I run a file over the scraper edge and along sides and then run a Veritas burnisher (triangle profile) over the edge at about 14 deg angle a few times pulling burnisher backwards a forwards a few centimetres on each stroke (stops it getting too hot). Thats about it....
I do some heavy duty scraping on my guitar tops, sides and backs so I keep 4-5 scrapers ready to go...less burnishing needed halfwayt through th job that way.

MikeW has a good link for this. I copied it too my computer but I can't work out what the origional address was. Maybe PM and he'd tell you. Worth reading it, easy to understand stuff with good diagrams etc.

kiwigeo...I have the burnishing jig to and I'm starting to reget buying it. It might keep the burnisher and the right angle, but I dont feel like I have a lot of control. I think I'll try a traditional burhisher and see If my luck changes. Thanks to all for the info.
