Hey Zed!
I try to ensure my posts are always rude, inappropriate, break forum rules, and are not gracious, and for all of that the red spot has been hard earned in accordance with the forum guidelines!
But I am curious.
Was it the fact that I:
a) Don't mind playing with myself.
b) Took the mick out of people who wear silk pyjamas
c) Am staunchly supportive of the preservation of and evolution of a uniquely Australian culture, and particularly dislike the intrusion of American speech into that culture. (We are an Asian nation after all, with British roots)
d) Am a hypocrite of the worst kind because I am a franchisee of an American sandwich chain  which sells bread rolls disguised as "sandwiches"....aaarrgggh. (and worse....ANZAC COOKIES .) But I did get them to change the spelling of" Baking Center"!
Sorry if I've offended you...I don't intend any personal offence to anyone EVER. Let me know how and I'll put it right!
Same apology applies to all the other silk pyjama wearing promoters of an international (not to be confused with multi-national) culture who have a propensity for self abuse and who may have been offended by my post above!
Cheers,
P

Did Zed give you a red for this biting? Basturd! (Interesting spelling there to get it past the censor. )There was nothing in your post that should have earned you any negative reputation. I agree with everything that you were espousing. So I'll probably get a reddy myself now.

I am so glad that I am not the only one who gets undeserved Red squares. I still don't know how you guys do that. I'm surprised that Zed gave one to anyone, he seems like such a nice boy. He is so honest, no one else calls a wanker a wanker and means it.
All you need is love, be nice to each other, remember we are mates not Iraqies.
Even Kenmill had his good points!
I'm out of here before Neil reads that one.Cheers

Interesting discussion.
From the beginning, when I first started carving out my domain under the house, I have always called it a workshop, well before I found out that Septics also called it a workshop.
The problem I now have is what to call the shed which I am converting into my finishing area. I have nearly finished building it, painting is finished and carpet going in tomorrow, so it is too good to call a shed. Maybe my polishing studio?
Peter.

"Sheds" is where "Blokes" do their thing, "Shops" is where they go to buy good stuff to put in the shed, "Workshops" are where accountants, pubic servants and other socially unaceptable types escape from the harridans they have encumbered themselves with and "Garages" are where you either fill up with juice or where retired english teahers keep their Volvos'.
So There!

Chris
I haven't insulted you since I met you in Sydney. I was the smart ar#e with silentC in tow. Remember?
I am an English teacher, and before you qualify your post by saying you said "retired", I propose that the sentiment remains the same. Don't ever, even on a Tuesday, accuse me of driving a Volvo. It isn't funny. I am an Aussie. I drive a Holden or a Ford. No poofter cars for me. Maybe Volvos are OK for black, buttonless, shirt wearing South Australian grandfathers who trapse all over the country under the pretence of being nice to Pauline, (will I see you in Newcastle?) but not for real wood working macho types like Silent and me. So back off bozo!!!!!
I will accept as your apology a jar of Tripoli (EEE).
Otherwise the friendship is off.
Nice try, don't you think?
cheers

Hey Oz,
Not only is your catapillar the same size as mine, it looks like someone'll beholdin' it too!! (Message just popped up -if you'll excuse the terminology- when I accidentally had the mouse just hovering over it!)
The wonders of this board never cease to amaze and confound!
I'll beholdin' my own for a bit thanks very much!

I answered the same question not long ago.
SilentC is fairly close but the word has a couple of origins and meanings.
Middle English via Anglo-French & Old French eschoppe ‘booth’ from Middle Low German schoppe, Old High German scopf ‘porch’
1 a building, room, etc., for the retail sale of goods or services (chemist's shop; betting shop).
2 colloq. an act of going shopping (our big weekly shop).
3 a place in which manufacture or repairing is done; a workshop (engineering shop).
4 a profession, trade, business, etc., esp. as a subject of conversation (talk shop)
5 colloq. an institution, establishment, place of business, etc.
It would appear that the word came from the mediaeval when goods were sold from a porch (or booth) outside the home. as in blacksmiths shop etc.
Over time goods were sold in a separate establishment which became known as a 'shop'. In the same way, goods were made in a work'shop'. The word 'work' differentiates it from a sales'shop'.Dewy
