    Sizing considerations for wood screws:


    PILOT HOLE DEPTH
    In Hardwoods - equal to length of screw
    thread
    In Softwoods - equal to 1/2 of screw
    thread length
    BODY HOLE DEPTH
    Equal to length of screw shank
    MAX. COUNTERSINK DIAMETER
    Equal to outside diameter of screw head
    MAX. OVERALL SCREW LENGTH
    Approx. 1/8" less than combined
    thickness of workpieces being joined
    RULE-OF-THUMB FOR SCREW STRENGTH
    A longer screw of smaller diameter is
    stronger than a shorter screw of larger
    diameter

    Good on ya and thanks. Great help for a bush carpenter like me! I shall save this and print it in letters large, and attach to a suitable surface in my shed where I can refer it before I start screwing (and don't edit this 'cause I'm dead serious!.
