Default Sourcing hinges for glass panel doors?

I'm making an entertainment unit, roughly 2m high by 1m wide, which I plan to front with tinted glass doors. Each door is 1m x 500mm x 6mm tempered glass. They're heavy.

Now, I can get the "flat pack" type hinges from Bunnies - which are basically just u-profiled channels that clamp onto the glass, with a pin sticking out the top/bottom that pivot in holes drilled into the cabinet. (Poor description, perhaps, but I'm hoping y'all know the type I mean.)

Using these hinges will mean I'll need to have the front edge of the centre shelf sitting flush with the outside, so I have something to drill into. ie. the front of it will be visible, dividing the cabinet into upper and lower halves.

I don't really want this... I'd rather the centre shelf was hidden once the doors were closed. The Bunnies hinges'd be OK for the very top and bottom hinges, but not for the middle ones.

Anyone know where I can (quickly) source something more suitable?

BTW, drilling the glass is not a desirable option.

    G'Day Skew

I know what you mean about U shaped top and bottom but if you try http://www.nover.com.au/ they advertise a centre magnetic catch that may help, have a search through their site and its au. Hope it helps.

Hafele has one of the most extensive hardware cattle dogs around. Prices leave a lot to be desired though.

Hi Skew, any chance of the middle shelf support being made from clear plastic or plexi-stuff (sorry, too tired to remember properly) (and if I've read your description correctly)?

So is there such a beast as a u-channel hinge with the dowel bit stuck/part of a metal flap or something that is hinged??

    Good luck Skew

    cheers

You should be able to get them from a cabintery supplier like Parburys, they sell everything hinges, draw runners, etc. Ordered our framed frosted glass kitchen doors through them.

go into hinges, then click on glass door hinges and click forward for each page. Plenty of options there.

I am afraid it will be very difficult to get these in OZ, I do not think there is enough of a market for them here but maybe the second lot can help you.

    Thanks folks.

The Sugatsune ones look ideal, Wolfie, the ones in your second pic. Not what I was after, but would be better! No Aussie distributors though. I'd already contacted Euroglaze, but their hinges are for 10mm minimum thickness glass - mainly for shower screens and doors. Thanks for the links though!

I found the ones I wanted at Rockler, but can't source them in time. Similarly, I know that Blum & Cornall both make 'em, but I can't find any distributors with the right ones in stock.

    Oh, the joys of deadlines.

Maybe I ought to replace the 6mm glass with 10mm and use shower fittings? At least they're readily available... but something tells me I'll take the penalty and take the time to do it right. [sigh]

With tinted glass, 4mm shims of the right colour on the inside would be almost invisible. Shower fittings might be out of scale, though.
