Default Working out Square metres to Lineal Metres.

    G'DAY ALL

Just new to this forum. It's a great way to find out info about all sorts of wood working and constructing, very helpful and plenty of ideas. Now for my first thread.

We have just had an inground pool put in and we are in the process of putting a Merbau deck around it. We have worked out it to be about 65sqm including 10% wastage. We are using 140X19 and 90X19 Merbau boards alternating. What would the 65sqm be in lineal meters using the 2 different size boards. Also who, where and with good quality and price would be the best place to buy the Merbau decking boards from in the Melbourne metro area. We live in Wantirna South.

    Thanks Shifty Snr

i get it to about 283 lin/mtr of each size , depends on if you are leaving a gap between and how big the gap is .
but i would get the full amount and have a few bits left over

    90+3(gap)+140+3(gap) = 236mm width of one pair.

    1000mm/236mm = 4.24 pairs to a one metre width.

    ie skinny/fat-skinny/fat-skinny/fat-skinny/fat-skinny = 1034mm wide including gaps.

    Therefore you need 4x65m fats (err...140's) and 5 x 65m 90mm boards.

With 10mm spacing (not a good look, IMHO but make the numbers easier) each pair of boards would cover 250mm width. (140+10+90+10)

So you'd use 4 pairs of boards for every metre of width. ie. 4 lineal metres of each board per square metre.

Or some 290-300 lineal metres of each all up, with wastage.

Without knowing the actual deck dimensions & desired spacing, it's difficult to give an "exact" ball-park guesstimate.

just get 320 lin of each and you won't run out , then whats left over you can make a planter box or 2 that will match the floor .and a shoe rack , maybe a dog kennel .
having the extra will give you more freedom to select where you put your end joins too

Thank you very much for all your advice and ideas.

Just looked on the Chippy's website have noticed that there Merbau has come down by $1 per lm. Which is great.

    Cheers
