Lightbulb Sydney NSW. Wanted, Someone to build me a dining table! Swap or Pay

    Hi guys,

I hope this is a suitable place to post this slightly odd request. !?
I've had some timber planks for some years which were my dads before me, I've always liked the idea of building them into a dining table one day if I ever had time, the tools and learnt the skills like he had. (I'm lacking in all of these...)

We need a new kitchen table so wondering if anyone wants a project, has time and the means to do this? (or know's anyone who may be?) So a handyman, retiree or someone who's doing similar jobs and can fit this one in aswell.
I'll supply materials and happy to pay a nominal amount ontop for helping my wife and I out.

Not only will it find a long overdue use to these planks, it might save us money on buying a new table retail.

I'm based in Sydney eastern suburbs.
Look forward to hearing any feedback.

    Cheers David

David - any ideas on what sort of timber it is? What quantities do you have, what size table and what sort of design you had in mind?

I think cedar, maybe mohogany? There are 2 lots, so about 4 or so identical sizes and timber, they are clean & smooth. Then there are about 2-3 longer, wider and thicker pieces also (bit rougher), maybe a different timber again. Sorry I'll need to have a good look. They are old, dad had them aside for years but never made anything with them. I know wider than what is common.

As for a table, just simple, clean lines, natural tones, I guess we have modern style furniture. So not ornate ye olde country kitchen style, no red stains or varnish. More Ikea / Scandinavian Design.

Rectangular so probably 3 planks width, I reckon about 800 wide due to our narrow space, I know 900 is normal. But 3 x chairs can seat each side. Straight legs at outermost corners so chairs can fit in. Would be good to have brackets so legs can detach for ease of moving.

Happy to go with what ever is easy and works. Main aim to get a solution not hoard stuff for another 7 years.

    Cheers Dave

    Hi Dave
Plenty of people have hoarded nice timber in the hope of building something special one day.

Most end up in the same situation as you.

Get a keen, talented wood worker to make your table is a smart idea.

It would be helpful if you could post some pics of the timber and give the dimensions.
If it is cedar or a mahogany the timber will be red, not the Ikea yellow coloured Birch.

How long do you want your table? 1200mm, 1600mm longer?

Brackets aren't as nice or as strong as a good frame joining the four legs together. It is simple enough to remove the top from the base if you need to reduce weight to move the table out of the house. A cedar table 1600mm x 800mm isn't very heavy. Two people could move it without much drama.

    Do you have a budget?

If you want a table that you will treasure, you should expect to pay for quality.
We love working with nice timbers but our time is as valuable as any other tradesman.

Check out some of the Forum builders, like Wongo, there are some very talented people here.

    I hope this helps.
    cheers

Thanks guys for the PM's and phonecalls.

Let me speak to my wife and work out what we want. I'll also take some measurements and photo's.

Thanks Scally point taken about the colour of timber. I might take a bit down to a timber yard to ask them what it is!
Once we get a better idea of size and design it'll make things tangible. Totally appreciate what's involved with peoples time and skills, and happy to come to a solution that is win win. Ofcourse will need to find out what each persons services are worth and what we can afford.

    Cheers David
