timber outlets in brissie?
hello eveyone. as you can see this is my first thread in the forums. i spent an hour or so last night browsing though the forums. i was blown away by the amount of collective knowledge posted by all the members. i am about to start a project and i think i will direct any questions/hair-pulling-out kunumdums here.
anyway, to the point. im am currently in the early stages of building a corner comp. desk. ive noticed there are a few threads already on this topic. i have gained a lot of ideas from these and will try not to repeat any questions already asked. i would love to build a desk with a real traditional look, nothing to fancy, simple design with sturdy frame. it will be a two-part design with the desks butting together in the corner. they will be made in such a way that they could be used indipendently if desired. i will try and post the design as soon as i can. its all on paper at the moment. the rough dementions are: 1500x450(first desktop), 500x750(second desktop).
i would love to make it out of hardwood but i wont be able to afford it retail. pine is probably a better option i spose considering my lack of experience. i have access to all the tools (except lathe). i will have finlaysons turn the legs for me.
my question is if anyone knows of where i could find some quality second-hand hardwood. demolitoin yards for example. or the best place to buy timber from wholesale outlets. i know theres plenty around but if someone could give me a nudge in the right direction it would be very much appreciated.
cheers

Timber
Bails,
Welcome mate, What sort of timber were you loking for mate? If your after new stuff then you could try John gill there at marooka or bretts on the north side. I don't know of many 2nd hand places throught brisbane. If you find a few can you post them here. i bought 16 125 x 50's at the renovation barn in Ipswich in January this year.
got them for $3.40 per metre. They deliverd for that price and all timbers are straight and seasoned. I am planning a deck next year some time and when I came across them I had to buy. I did have a harder time convincing the minister for all things domestic that it was a good buy.
Trouble was We were getting married 3 days after I bought them. We still had a bit to pay for and needless to say I wasn't real popular when she came home and saw it all in the yard. Can't understand why....

Hi Bails,
Place on southside called WoodnYou. Lots of exotics/slabs etc. (very yummy place) They also have the gear to machine.
Big Red Shed would have some timber.
Oh, am selling my lathe if you are interested.
Cheers,

I'd recommend Big Red Shed for recycled timber or moxon timbers at Yeerongpilly or Watts Wood and Mouldings at Salisbury for new timber. Also have you considered veneer for the desktop? Brims at Yeerongpilly has a very nice selection of veneers on ply and particleboard.
WoodnYou at Coopers Plains has a range of timbers and all the workshop machines you may need to create your project..
Cheers

im not sure really, thats kinda where im stuck. as i said im pritty new to all this so i think i will look for whateva is available. saying that though. i am very willing to spend around the $400 dollar mark on the timber for this table. i dont want to slap it together with anything too soft. i would like to think that the desk will outlast me. i am confident i can make it right, i have plenty of time, tools, ideas. all it need is the right choice for the timber.
is there a timber that anyone has worked with lately that they can recommend? it needs to look the part.
as far as the lathe is concerned, i've already made arrangement to get the legs turned.

Ther is a plce out at Collingwood Park called Scihhels and there are in Kruger Parade. He sells new and seconds has lots of stuff you just have to sort through the piles. some has been there that I know of for thirty years
They only take cash and are not open Mondays
Can anyone tell me where to find the Reno Barn in Ipswich as I have trawled all sorts but come up with nothing.
Cheers Sam

unless you have the machinery to dress the timber (or go to woodnyou), you'll find it difficult if you start with rough sawn timber. That's why I suggested veneer panel. Watt's wood have a samples board to help you choose a timber.

you can also take your timber to woodnyou and use their machines. I did some very old jarrah and cost about $120.
Because the timber was old and really hard, and had been used before, I paid for a blade shapern, which you normally would not have to do.
As Michael said, if it ain't planed you pushing %$#( up hill)
cheers,

Hi bails,
I can help you with either Bluegum (Widths 500 - 1100mm) or Old growth Radiata Pine Slabs (Widths 600-800 mm).All are 50mm thick and natural edge and should be able to help with any dimensional componets for your desk. Also can have Slabs dressed on a "Slabmaster" Levelling/Sanding machine.
You can ring me on 0409 584 707 for pricing etc.I'm at Rocklea in Brisvegas.
Regards,
Brodski
