Timber Veneered Ply Wood
I have been asked to make a pair of speaker boxes for some high end speakers.
What i want is cabinet grade ply wood about 19mm.
Mister Ply & Wood have the ply wood but not much choice when it comes to the face veneers......Hoop Pine or Fijian Cedar.
I was hoping for something a bit fancier without having to put my own veneer on top.
Recently I made the Snakewood cases for a turntable and Pre-amp.
It would be good to at least have the speaker cabinets a similar colour.
I need two sheets 2400 x 1200.
Does anyone know where I can find a supplier in NSW?Scally

A lot of speaker builds i've seen have used MDF then covered with a layer of veneer. Any reason for choice of plywood vs MDF for the speaker boxes?

Excellent, thanks guys, I will give them a call.
Hurcorh, plans specify MDF or cabinet grade ply wood.
Both are more stable than solid timber that will move with the seasons.
I think MDF is popular because it is easier to rout out the recesses.
My preference is ply wood because it wont fall to pieces if it gets wet and I prefer working with it over MDF.Scally

Scally, MPW will indeed do you a plywood with custom veneer, I recently bought a sheet of 25mm hoop pine ply with american walnut veneer on it. Process was pretty simple, I told them what I wanted and they got back to me with a price. After I recovered from the shock I got the OK from the guy I'm making the furniture for and went ahead with the order. Easy peasy.
Though I should have sprung for them to cut the sheet down for me, it's a massive pain in the bum to move such a large bit of ply around.

Thanks MrPete
I was sure I had done that before at MPW but they didn't seem interested when I asked them recently.
Maybe I didn't ask the right question.
The standard Hoop on 19mm was $195.
I had a difficult phone conversation with Laminex and got an estimate of $390.
A fairly big jump in price I thought.Scally
