Number one son has taken an interest in tools... what boy doesn't I guess, but turning three on the weekend makes him a little young in my book to have his own tools. I was gifted my first tool kit (screw drivers, hammer, pliers, etc.) at five years which I met with great enthusiasm. My parents were less enthusiastic when I started disassembling their appliances.

During the construction of our new pergola my assistant was no less enthusiastic than I was, but I dare not leave him unattended lest I discover a few new nails in the deck. I want to encourage him but I feel he's just not old enough to be working with real tools at all.

Then I saw this [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuoH8nsrlqI"]this[/ame] video posted on this forum in reference to a 9-year old kid driving a front end loader. I did all of those things when I was a kid, but who would do that these days? I know I would.

Eventually I want to make my son a fair dinkum tool kit; woodworking tools, maintenance tools, general stuff. But when is an appropriate age for this stuff? What say you folks?

Dave.
