Default To vee or not to vee?

    Hi,
When making Tongue and Groove joint pannels for furniture as opposed to flooring does the 'V' have any effect other then aesthetics? I intend to use the floating pannels in the backs of bookcases and sideboards and such. I thought the V might help hide the gap made as the pannel contracs? Is this right?

I think the v does hide any gaps a bit if the tongue is kept the same colour as the boards. Reason I mention this is I made a pine bookcase many years back and the back pannel was stained same as the rest of the unit. In dry spells as the wood shrunk the lighter toungs could be seen as a light line. Cant see it when loaded with books so just left it as is.
    Regards
    John
