Window Shutters
Her Indoors has been on about shutters for her bedroom window, as the new neighbour's house goes up, and her privacy down.
Now I am all tooled up, I have few excuses, and once I think about it, it could be quite interesting, not to mention guaranteeing continuance of my 6AM cup of tea in bed!
The only real challenge would seem to be the hinge mechanism for the shutters and the design of the open/close methodology. Also the availability of the metal swivels and fixings.
The window in question is around 400mm in height and 2000mm long. Sounds strange but it is situated high up on the wall, above the head of HI's bed, and actually looks quite OK.
The rest of the house has timber ventian blinds, cedar in colour (but alas not in construction).
Anyone done shutters before?

I've never made them, but there are a few threads on this, so try a search for plantation shutters.
Try http://www.woodworkforums.ubeaut.com...ation+shutters
or these guys to kits - http://www.portphillip.com.au/index.htm
Hope that is helpful.

Thank you. I really must learn and discipline myself to search the forum archives.
The construction looks realtively simple, if a bit tedious. I guess the question of timber arises. The commercial guys use Paulowia, I'll see if its available in Sydney. I also wonder what the maximum span should be. Was thinking 3 x 600m which would give aesthetically pleasing dimensions, however 2 x 940 would cut down the work, but would the shutters sag? I also couldn't make out how the open/close stick at the front attached to the louvres. I guess small hinges would work if well hidden. Awful lot of hinges tho.
My cost for the commercially available, self assemble unit would be around $600 so I need to check material costs carefully.

g'day bodgy.
No dramas about the searching - if you didn't know to seach for plantation shutters, you might have been there all day.
I can't comment on how strong the arrangements you mentioned are. I suspect the 2x would be stronger, but I agree that 3x would look better.
Others may be able to help.
Good luck - post some pics if you decide to build them yourself.
