    Default WIP Wall Cabinet

Now that the shed is in a useable state, its time to get into a couple of projects that have been hanging about for ages.

Iam making a wall cabinet for one of my daughters, in which to house her embroidery cottons. I have made several of these previously, SWAMBO has a 288 reel and a 96 reel cabinet, but this is the first with the benefit of the power tools that I have now. I guess the task will serve to sort out my level of competence or incompetence, and I suppose a steep learning curve will be in order. However, I will take it slowly, no doubt still making mistakes, and hopefully learn from them.

Basically, the cabinet is a simple rectangular frame, with a backing board, and a board inside with holes drilled to take pegs. Its not possible to buy the board predrilled given the varying shapes of cotton reels. The "pegboard" slops backwards from the bottom to the top to prevent the reels from slipping off too easily. The cabinet in this case will have two panelled doors, but when the size gets to 288 reels, 4 bifolding doors are necessary.

A couple of pics to start, and I'll do my best to keep it up.

If he gets it without working for it; he's a parasite; and if he accumulates it after a life time of hard work, people call him a fool who never got anything out of life."

Why not drill the holes at a slight angle? Would make for a slimmer cabinet.

Tried that, Nick. For some reason the reels need to sit flush to the board. Anyway, the angle of the bottom of the reel to the base if an angled hole is drilled is still the same overall size.

    Default WIP Wall Cabinet

Made a bit of progress in the last few days. Doors are finished, "pegboard" also finished, main frame complete, and stays for "pegboard" glued up today. Backboard still to be attached when the clamps come off tomorrow.

    Couple of pics.

    what is the timber?

I wonder whether you'd be better finishing off the 'peg board' before inserting the pegs? assuming it gets a finish.

Timber is meranti/pacific maple. Had it since don't know when; was DAR for the most part. Last of it gone now. The pegs and the board are sprayed together, much easier than trying to spray the pegs and the board seperately

Door panels are 6mm meranti ply.

Thanks CH, these are pretty simple though, although the pegboard is a bit time consuming. Can't seem to standardise at all, as there are so many different size cotton reels to cater for. Even been asked for a cabinet that will take 4 sizes!!

Keen to see how this one works out. Mum is a stitcher, so this could be an idea that I might 'borrow'!

Yep, WR, it surely is......further development inside is the subject of a more than brief hiatus while the Christmas projects are completed, and the that Season is upon us with the mandatory gathering of the clan, this year in Newcastle with one of our daughters and her brood moving house (again) to a more spacious abode that will better accommodate her 6 offspring.

With a bit of luck, I'll get some time with my 6 year old grandson who is very hands on....got his own workbench and some tools. He really enjoys using his hands and his tools; he will make a very handy young man, and hopefully a handy Dad.

Not like his father, absbloodyutely useless....and doesn't want to try or learn....lazy too.
