I have made coasters from Gidgee and after sanding, oiled, oiled, oiled and then a couple of coats of minwax.
So, what MJ says, what type of wood? Is it dry? Is it heartwood, heartwood and sapwood or branch?Pat

It depends on what type of timber, and if it's end grain showing on the top face then they're going to be pretty fragile whatever you do and whatever the timber or moisture content... if you're intent on doing it that way maybe cut them thicker than they were meant to be and cut them down again after they've driend out really well.

Depends on how much heat you generate sanding them too. If it's power sanding, or on a lathe, then maybe the heat build up is drying them out too quickly.
