Acer laptop, advice sought
The above laptop (was wifes machine) is around five years old and has been a good runner. XP/sp2 with Acer recovery installed.
It will not run at an acceptable speed if I install virginmedia virus security, everything slows up.
Used Acer recovery set up and everything runs well, but no virus protection if I go on web.
I suspect with a recovery program (ghost) thats all I can get too.
How do I get over this problem?
Or do I just use the laptop for special programs and do not set up for any web use?woody U.K.

Sounds like the virginmedia anti-virus is too resource hungry or checking too thoroughly thereby slowing everything down. I have used AVG Antivirus for years and it has been quite effective. Do a Google search and you should find it easily. There is a free version and a full-version. The free version is fine, however to get complete coverage I use the full version.
Hope that helps.

Second vote for AVG Free.
I just installed Windows 7 on a similar age Acer laptop (Acer 1641), however I did have to upgrade it from 256 meg of RAM to 2 gig to do so, and now it runs quite happily. Once solid state drives come down more in price, I'll probably put one of those in, too.

AVG is fine but it is also getting a big big & slows the computer down now too.
Try Avira, it is also free.Cliff.

have any of you actually read the independent testing done? Anyone who says avg is good should not be offering advice on this... Stick to wood fellahs! AVG IS CRAPPOLLA and here is the proof.............................................

Hmm... the test is not very 'real world'.
I use AVG Free, just the anti-virus & not the full suite but I also use Spybot with it & it works for me.
I have put Avira on a couple of older machines as it seems to not slow them down as much as AVG.Cliff.

Avira is the best of the crop paid or free imho. You should never have 2 security suites on one machine, there is always a secondary check online you can use with Trend Micro house call... AVG detection rate is average, antivir is a better detectng engine from all the tests I have seen and more importantly on machines that had avg that I have seen antivir eat with my own eyes.
What can I say, most people who use avg use Internet Exploiter. Slow computer and slow web browsing, makes no sense to me???
Spybot is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo slow and superantispyware does a better job! I used spybot till I discovered sas, it was a relief and haven't looked back for years.

Auroraaustralis I have been in this industry way too long to know that opinion varies and that a search via google will bring up just as many surveys, reviews, comparisons, tests blah blah that either support or can a product. I also have too much experience to know not to take criticism via a forum personally nor make such black and white statements and that in many cases sometimes the best product is not necessarily the best product for the individual. It is sometimes the best fit for the purpose that is fine. And finally, in case there is any doubt, i am speaking about the IT industry. AVG is a fit for the purpose product. There are better. There are worse.

I worked for defence and have been doing this since my commodore 64. You are right though, opinions are like ****** but I wouldn't buy a cup of coffee off anyone who told me avg sorry

AVG & Spybot do not have to be loaded as security suites.
I use AVG Free for antivurus & I use Spybot for Spyware & to immunize IE & FF.
I do not use Spybot's Teatimer.
I do not use AVG's security toolbar.
I do not have problems.
I am fussy about my coffee & usually make my own.Cliff.

Yep , I find superantispyware good to . I also run avira and adaware . Sometimes the one picks up stuff that the others miss. I have spybot on here too somewhere .
I run them manually .

Just another one for the mix.
I use Microsoft Security Essentials, it's free from... guess where?
Works for me and I browse the web a lot. (I run a commercial website).
Seems to be fairly light on resources and I haven't had anything get past it since I started using it.
Cheers,
Dan

Pleased to report in that my old laptop is as fast as a greyhound now.
Put in the MSE, I did have to get windows installer 3.1 before I could download. I also hear that my old laptop xp/sp2 now no longer gets support from Microsoft, this laptop is only a stanby for the web if my desktop is in trouble and all my old software works fine, unlike the new laptop (W7 home) which will not accept some of my old 98 apps.woody U.K.
