    Default Forum BBQ SW Melb.

Following on from Al's and Scooter's extravaganzas, I thought I'd throw in a bid for the next BBQ, a darkside BBQ.

Theme will be comparisons, bring a tool to use or compare (no jackhammers).
    Probable examples:
    • Academy Sawworks blade plane-off against a standard #4 or #5.
    • Comparison of Lie-Nielsen LA, Lee Valley LA (Steve) and HNT Gordon block planes.
    • LV vs LN 4 1/2 (anyone have a LN 4 1/2?)
    • LN vs LV LA smoother (anyone have a LV smoother?)
    • scraper planes LN112 and LV scraper.
    • Any other suggestions?
    Can demo machines if interested.

Timing TBA, open to suggestions but I thought maybe early Dec.

Hand in the air! - I'll bring a few LNs and LVs - and a hopefully properly adjusted Spiers replica

Any interest in a Domino demo?

Absolutely! That would be fun, but may be very expensive in the longer term .

    I'll bring a hammer for a nail-driving comp.

I'm even willing to demo how to sharpen it on the grinder!
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

If it will get you there, then yes!

I think that for most guys it would be nice to pick up either one and just try it to see which they prefer in use. It is rare you would get the chance to actually try them and have people standing around who can answer some questions.

Or, if you prefer, bring your own plane along to test it against some of the other types on the same wood. You must have some very interesting planes to explain to people, you've certainly had some great posts about them.

If it's a true dark Side BBQ, then you have to eat uncooked meat, drink warm beer and walk there.
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

You didn't read the bit about the machines? To keep you happy Ian I'll give you some magnets and you can play with the jointer blades (my crushed fingers are still recovering).

My old mentor in floor-laying was a stickler for properly dressed hammers. He would've thrown his hands in the air in horror at the sight of Scooters... and given me a clip around the ear if he saw the state of mine now.
