Hand tools required for a project in PNG
Gidday folks
I have discussed this with Neil and as such is ADMIN approved.
A friend of mine is heading to a remote island in PNG in January. The aim is to teach the local villagers some basic woodwork skills. They have very little power on the island, only a little generator so hand tools are going to be the focus.
So, what I am asking is, if anyone has old but usable hand tools that fit the list below, and finds that they don't use them, then I know where they can go, and be used to better the lives of people less fortunate than most of us here.
The following is a list of what would be appropriate.
Spokeshaves, Froes, Adzes, Drawknives, sharpening stones, saw files, chisels and gouges, clamps, Drill bits to suit braces, hand saws, back saws.
So far it seems there are more than enough vices and braces (no bloody bits!!).
If you have any of the above, and feel generous enough to pass them on to a worthy cause then let me know by PM.
The notice is a little short as I will need to have things in my hand by the middle of October so that shipment can be organised.
I'm happy to pick up from around Brisbane, within reason.I'm at Wavell Heights in the inner north.
Cheers

I am currently getting a container ready for Vanuatu which includes hand tools. There may be a small amount of surplus in chisels and saws. All will need to be sharpened is that of interest to you

All donations will be gratefully received. We will be having a sharpening session before the gear gets packed. How to get them to Brisbane is the only problem I foresee.
Cheers

Perhaps you could fill us in a little on your friends project. Is it through an aid group or a local community project and what his connection to Papua New Guinea. What surprises me when you go into these villages and stay with the locals you may not have running water or a flushing toilet and there maybe only be one hammer for the whole village but every one has a mobile phone. I haven't been to PNG although others I travel with have, anything that helps health, education and living conditions is a good thing and it is amazing what you can do with a bush knife and bit of wood.

Sorry for not replying sooner.
I will find out who is sponsoring this project.
Hand Planes, yeah. But mostly just the items on the list in the original post. Bits for hand braces would be REAL handy!! Also, as Jonh says, it's amazing what you can do with a bush knife and a bit of wood. This is not about fine furniture, more about the basics of living relatively comfortably.
Cheers

Bevan etal,
I have done a garage sale go-around and bought a few items for you. I also scrounged through my stock of unsed for ages tools.
attached photo is what I'd like to donate.
I am in Medowie so getting them to you will be the issue.
Any forumites travelling from Newcastle/Sydney area to up north interested in getting them there?
Lyle.
