Retailing - what a senseless waste of human life!
Ever since Wesfarmers took over Coles I have noticed the lack of service at Coles stores. Lines are longer at the checkouts, product diversity is dropping and the place is filled with 14 year old "assistant managers".
Even the aisles of Coles look like a Bunnings shop with boxes of specials causing trolley congestion. And yes Bunnings prices are going up markedly eg 4 ltr Dulux Aquaenamel was $69 now $79, Potting mix was 2.54 now 2.91.
Since Woolworths announced they were getting out of the hardware lines at Big W , Bunnings prices on similiar stock lines have increased markedly. Things like Mineral turps, paint, plastic pots.
But quite frankly if Wesfarmers try to manage Coles the same way they manage Bunnings stores (which is hopeless IMO) then I wouldnt be surprised if they got into a bit of trouble.

The reviews going on at the moment into petrol and food prices will have some interesting consequences what ever the outcome. Wesfarmers management have a strong track record, I think it may take them a while to come to grips with food retailing supply chain but Im sure they will. To roll out the Bunnings model (which makes good money) seems perfectly logical to me.
Im guessing one of the outcomes of these reviews will be more competition. probably to the benefit of WalMart. Now that kind of retailing will really change the Aus marketplace. Self service checkouts!
BTW we have been Coles and now Wesfarmers shareholders for 9 odd years. We bought them for the retail discount and they have not recovered in value since then. ie we are too chicken to take the loss. We shop at Woolies cause the quality is better, go figure..."We must never become callous. When we experience the conflicts ever more deeply we are living in truth. The quiet conscience is an invention of the devil." - Albert Schweizer
