Tasmanian holiday - suggestions
Suggestions please for the remainder of our Tassie holiday.
Been to the Deloraine craft fair.
Done the top end and are now heading south via the East Coast to Hobart.
Art craft antiques.
Bruny island. Any tours better/stand out.
We have an 85 year old lady with us so nothing too strenuous.
Are Salamanca markets still good.
Distilleries.
Larks is close in hobart.
Any rum distillers around.

Hi Lyle
The MONA art gallery is a must see. You need a few hours for a good look. Took my 80 year old Mum there on the back of my Harley Davidson and she seemed to enjoy the artworks.
Salamanca markets are still okay at this time of year but get so busy once the holiday season starts they become a chore. They are on each Saturday. For a more traditional "markety market" the Sorell markets are on each Sunday from about 9am till 1pm (20 minute drive east of Hobart).
The Pennicott tours on Bruny Island can be spectacular, however check the weather forecast before you go as they can be punishing in bad, cold weather.
A drive up to the top of Mount Wellington (just behind Hobart) takes maybe 15 minutes and is one hell of a view once you are there. (nothing strenuous about that).
Never done the Distilleries (always too drunk to drive there).
If you just want to sight see, a drive south through the Huon Valley all the way to Cockle creek is pretty nice. Last 20 odd kms is gravel (but 2wd will handle it). As far south as you can go by road in Australia and it is beautiful.
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, right in town is also a good place to spend an hour or 2.
Port Arthur is also a popular tourist destination. Prolly need to allow a day for that.
Or go to New Norfolk (much closer) and check out some interesting antique shops.

Excellent. Thanks for that.
Booked a day tour for Bruny.
Hadn't known about the Sorell markets. So will definitely give them a whirl.
There was a cruise ship in port today and the city was packed.
Hopefully they'll be gone by Saturday for the Salamanca markets.
Will also do over the New Norfolk antique shops.
That'll leave a few days to do some touring you suggested.
Thanks for your suggestions.
Much appreciated.

Artful Bodger has covered it very well!
If the top of Mt Wellington is in the clouds, the Mount Nelson Signal Station may still be clear and offers pretty decent views too. There should be tea rooms there, unless they closed since I was there the last time, quite a while ago I must say.
Enjoy your trip!

Definitely going to try Mt Wellington. Watching the weather to judge the best time.
Thanks
Lyle.

I'd stop in Richmond village, east of Hobart. Very nice little town and it has Australia's oldest surviving Stone Bridge.

Richmond also has Australia's oldest surviving gaol, although it's not in use and it's got a few cellar doors although I don't know what exactly
