    Default Whats Best?

Hi All and a Merry Christmas.

I currently have Vicmarc half speed grinder and have fitted it with a CBN wheel. I use this for sharpening turning tools and wood chisels and it does a good job. Now I have a bit of cash I and posing the question, do upgrade to a tormek T4 which is also a 200mm wheel, do I go the whole way to a T7 or do I keep the CBN vicmarc and purchase the tormek micro adjustable support and add the tormek jigs?

I am really interested in peoples opinions and views on what they use and what will get me the best results.

    Thanks all,

    Peter

    Thumbs up

As Rome is the eternal city then this is the eternal question.

Some years ago I bought a Heligrind from John Crawford. Worked well enough, especially with the Blue Max wheel.
Main problem was I did not like the grind for my detail gouge and it would not handle bigger tools.

Have drooled over the Tormeks and also thought about the Sorby system. Tormek too costly for a pensioner's pocket
Sorby system has problems as found by Ern and others.

Neil - Dai Sensei - turned up here with a slow speed grinder and CBN wheel and used a Tormek jig. YUM!!

I have made my own version of the Tormek tool holder but have yet to give it a good try out. Would love to do as Neil
has done but dollars are the killer for me.

Yep I do realise it is a big like "how long is a piece of string". Anyway, I have decided to stay with the Vicmarc and CBN and I have added the Tormek bench mount kit. I also got the flat blade jig for chisels and plane blades plus the uni jig for skew chisels. Very happy with my setup so far.

hi Peter, thinking of getting the vicmarc/carrols slow speed 8inch grinder , and a CBN wheel. What grit wheel did you get and what wheel do you match it with.Derek Cohens revew of this setup was full marks. As I only do flat chisels and irons,I like the lee valley tool rest. Is the Tormek tool rest superior ? thanks , Ross

Hi Ross, I use a 180 CBN and the 80grit wheel that came with the grinder. As I have the tormek on the CBN I have a carbatec rest on the other side. I much prefer the tormek setup but you are comparing $30 to $230 so I guess it's no comparison.
    Hope this helps a bit.

    Regards Pete

I bought the T7, very happy with it, easy to use, repeatable. Can't compare it to other products though as I have no experience with them. Probably overkill for what I do but I do like blades to be sharp. Good luck with whatever you decide.
