Big Cat air nailer
Just bought meself a $99 brad / staple gun (Big CatSF5040) and on testing at various air pressures 4-7 bar found that the piston bit leaves a nice 1mm deep impression in the timber (tas oak) Not sure if this is usual but is certainly not desirable. Only adjustment seems to be in the trigger safety thingo which dosn't effect the depth of the impression. It did come with a spare piston & wondering if this was cut off 1mm would it sort the fault Or take it back and get a better one!!
Cheers Benj

Hi Benji,
as far as I know they all leave a imprint in the wood.
I have a framing, fixing and a brad nail guns.
I know this because when I run out of nails it still leaves a imprint.
I might be corrected here but I thought that the nail head is meant to go below the wood for the strongest bond
Just my thoughts

The combo brad/staple guns commonly leave a depression when driving nails because the nail is driven by the same piston, which has to be a flat bar so that it can drive the staples. If you fiddle with the piston, you might find that it wont drive the staples properly.
Congratulations on combining the words 'cat' and 'air nailer' in the subject line. You certainly got my attention"I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."

I have framing nailers, finish nailers, brad nailers, 1/4" and 1/2" staplers and they all leave a mark of one form or another. They come from multiple manufacturers.

Big Cat update
Yeah thanks for the replies! Proof that there is more than one way to skin a cat ! Spoke to Air Tech expert, suggested lowering the air pressure. Fine if you don't want consistency or mind nails not fully driven home. The beast also has a tendency to misfire as well which still left the 6.8 x 1.0 x 1.1mm deep footrint. As the kit came with a spare piston bit, decided to grind off 1.1mm Result 25mm Brad level with the face ( no problem I'll punch them in when reqd ) Would not drive 50mm brads all the way ( unable to punch them effectively either ) so cut 0.7mm from the other piston bit for the longer brads. No marks on timber and able to run at variable pressure to suit the density of the timber being fixed. May have done my warranty but hey No Footprints !
Cheers Benj
