    Default CC & Lie Nielson.

    G'day All,
Yesterday morning I dropped into see the people at Mik and purchase a Sorby hollowing tool. ( You know, just one more tool, then I'll be right.) I'm going to have a go at turning hollow vessels. Dunno how I'll go, but I'll have a bit of fun trying.
Whilst I was down at Mik I was shown some Lie Nielson Low Angle Planes that were going out on special, as they had some surface rust on the bodies due to moisture in the boxes. The moisture control paper didn't do the job properly. I just couldn't let the opportunity pass, so for $190.00 & $195.00 for a No.4 low angle smoother & No. 5 low angle jack plane respectively, they are now mine. I cleaned the rust off with Wurth "Rost Off" ( their spelling ) , L-Bow grease & Neils Ubeaut EEE ultrashine! They have come up very well.
Does this gain me entry into the hallowed Darksiders Hall of Infamy? I didn't get any power cords with them, honest!
    Regards,
    Barry.

    Welcome to the precipice!

    G'day Groggy, Derek & Mike W,
Yes, I reckon that I'm doomed, the slope just seems to be getting steeper. I guess that there's no turning round now? Fortunately, ( ) the Adelaide Timber & Working with Wood show is coming up in July so I'll be saving all my spare pennies for just one more darkside tool & then I'll be right! Gotta find some free shed time to do justice ( I hope ) to the planes.
    Regards,
    Barry.

Yeah Stuart, I know. Wishful thinking, but that's the Plan, which is always open to review at the time of purchase.
Thanks for the positve support mate.

    Barry,

Thanks to your post I phoned Mik this morning and grabbed the last LA smoother, the Jacks had all gone by then. A greenie going your way, now all I've got to do is get it past the kitchen and to the shed. What's the line? that's right look at how much I saved today dear!

    G'day John,
Well done on scoring the last LN #4 smoothing plane. It was the last plane left after my little foray on Saturday. I scored the last LN #5 Jack plane then.
The rust on them is not too deep & should clean up with WD40, Rost Off etc.. I used a Webrax 1500 scouring pad with Rost Off & then Ubeaut EEE Ultrashine on the pad + a fair bit of Elbow Grease. Perhaps you could also apply hydrochloric acid onto the rusted area & work into the rust with steel wool. Wear good quality acid resistant gloves & safety glasses if you choose to go this way. Once you have removed the rust, thoroughly clean the body with cold water or an alkaline solution to neutralize the acid then apply a rust preventative. Apparently Camelia Oil is very good for this purpose.
As for getting the plane into the shed via the kitchen, can't help you there John. My shed is actually at the front of my house, so it's straight out of the ute & into the shed for me. What's that dearest, just going to open the doors to put the ute away. Be a sweetie & do a couple of cups of tea for us & we'll read the Satd'y paper together, whaddya reckon ? - doesn't always work. Always worth a try.
    Regards,
    Barry.

Nice haul Barry, that specials table at MIK is well worth checking out. A couple of weeks back I scored some nice Rob Soreby paring chisels for $40 a piece. Previous week there were a bunch of titan chisels a school had traded in....$8 a piece.

    Cheers Martin

Thanks for the tips Barry, I ended up rubbing the body on a piece of old carpet to remove the powdery rust, and followed up with EEE and a scouring pad. There is no pitting and you would not even know the thing had any rust in the first place. The plane has had its first run and produced really nice shavings straight from the box.

I'm quite familiar with Hydrochloric Acid and wouldn't use it on anything metal, it certainly get a quick shine but does pit the surface especially if you don't adequately kill it. Have a look at electrolysis, works a treat cleans up rust without effort and there is no residual issues at all. It does not even damage the paintwork.

It is handy hearing what MIK have on that throw out table, having picked up a couple of the Titan paring chisels earlier it sounds as if good bargains can be had from time to time.

    John.
