Hey, now there's an idea! When FIL was down here last trawling through the CT cattledog he commented on how he'd love a spindle moulder and how much he could use one, maybe, just maybe I buy one on the guise that it's for him, buy it and forget that I actually bought it for him.
But then SWMBO, would fall dead on the floor if I suggested spending that much on him. But, as much as that'd mean free for all on spending if she did, I love her too dearly for that.

The reality is that my collection has grown over 34 years, and if I have $10k worth of gear now (which I do) that's less than $6.00 per week averaged over that time isn't it?
Her television and sound system are worth that pretty much, and there's a sewing machine, overlocker and half a fabric store in the spare room, but who's counting?
She has absolutely no hesitation in supporting any purchase I make and gets cranky if I cut back on quality to save a few dollars, but that should also be seen in the context of not having made too many purchases at all for 20 years or so when things were much tighter than they are now.
Of course most of all she realises well and truly, that she's bloody lucky to have ME!!
Cheers,

We have a number of credit cards, a combined one we use to rack up our reward points on. I have my own low value credit limit ($1000) card that I use to buy stuff over the web - funny how SWMBO gets to use that one when she wants to buy on the web as well. She also has her own high limit card for "personal stuff". Up until recently she could see my credit card spending on Netbank but I couldn't see hers. Now that I can see hers, I makes sure I spend just a little less each month on stuff for the shed. I have to say that recently when I got a raise she was very happy for me to spend a reasonable amount of that on the shed. She was also very supportive of me getting a new TS and he is very happy for me to generally potter around in the shed.

I don't have to justify jack and as long as the bills are paid, I'll buy what ever the hell I want. My missus is always happy for me when I get excited over a new tool. If she wasn't that sort of bird, I wouldn't be with her...
Anyway, I guess I'm lucky because aside from building things out of wood, I love pulling down tools, cleaning them, repairing them if necessary, and putting them back together.
I buy busted tools on ebay, fix em up, test em out and decide whether or not I want to keep it. Sometimes I just buy 'em cause some dickhead found it in his late granddad's shed and has whacked it on ebay with Buy Now for 2 bob. I just sell the one's I don't want...
I always make money on them so it's the best of both worlds.
Don't know if there are enough good tools floating around back home to do it in Oz though....
Damien
PS. I bought 2 MOF 96 Es today which brings the current collection up to...7. I'm going to follow up on an old thread I posted and keep those interested in their restoration updated...Is it wrong to be in love with a sawbench?

This concept of mariage, common wealth, equality and prosperity have all got whacked somewhere.
I don't complain about her spending several $G to go for a long walk and she very rarely complains about what I spend on tools & stuff (admittedly most of it is deductable).
I don't camplain (much) about her spending "5 DAYS" to watch a game of cricket and she doesn't complain about me spending 3 days at the wood show.
She complians about plenty of other things but you get that.
cheersAny thing with sharp teeth eats meat.

Convincing SWMBO
I guess i am pretty lucky. I only have have to ask and explain how i could use something and low and behold its off to the hardware store for my new purchase. My wife doesn't mind me buying as long as it doesn't sit in the shed gathering dust.
Dave,

I'm kinda lucky - I spent 12 years in advertising using Mac's and found it easy to justify the spend. Then I had a change in careers and entered the building industry, and needed to buy tools (sometimes spelt as toys)
Then, we bought a dump and had to renovate it, more tools needed, had a bub 6 months ago and had to upgrade all the computer hardware to enable us to archive and share the little ones life with the relatives...
I was just thinking, if we have another baby I would want to make the cot and change table and possibly some sort of extension, but I would need a better computer to draw the plans, work out the budgets and archive it all on...

Been in the game myself now for 14 years. Although working for myself is a far cry from days gone by, but still very rewarding and have built a good client list with all clients in the government sector or related to it.
