GMC- Take it Back?
I have now opened the box with my bargain GMC thicknesser and the height adjustment handle disintegrated while i was attaching it. It's the cast metal bit that broke. Perhaps there is a thread that I've missed where there was some advice here. On reflection there is no way it would have fitted on the hex screw- too small. No problem, I can superglue the suppled hex scew into the larger one and use an allen key when I need to raise or lower the cutter.
Took the cover off to look for metal bits that may have found their way into the works and gave it a run. Very attractive light show! I know there is always sparking with electric motors but this looked pretty spectacular. I don't know whether I want the thought of that going on when I'm working though.
OK, I know every man and his dog has got one of these from Bunnings now so there are is some real experience out there. I don't expect a Rolls Royce for $200- I'm happy to persevere with the makeshift handle. It's still less than 30 days- does it go back?

take it back, this is clearly a faulty unit. These are a deleted model by GMC now so make sure the store you are taking it back to have some in stock. GMC are bringing a new model out but not until next year.
Hope this helps,
Eagle

I've got nothing but praise for mine which makes me think your's is a manufacturing fault. I'd take it back.
When you get the replacement I think you'll be pretty happy.

remember even when your 30 days are up you will still have a 2 year replacement warranty. if its a discontinued line they may have to replace it with the new model? when it comes out next year?

Just because it is a cheap GMC shouldn't mean that you should accept a faulty item. Bunnies and GMC offered to sell this item to you for the price you paid .... you didn't haggle the price down. If they havent been able to deliver a product that worked out of the box take it back.
You should not have to alter a new product to make it work ..... let them do the work in getting it fixed. Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

Eagle has willingly stated that he works for GMC in the past, so if he has said take it back, I think you can take that as gospel.

Thank you for the advice. I didn't know whether I was being too picky. Will take it back.
I was surprised by the relative quietness of the machine. I didn't put anything through it but it didn't make any more noise than an electric hand planer.
Nobody commented directly on the sparking thing. Is that normal for electric motors?

Pretty much- you just don't always have an 'opportunity' to see it.

Am taking it back but not before trying it out. That thing is b%^$&y marvellous! Tried it on a variety of boards to make up for the inconvenience of collecting the thing and taking it back. Some old pallet timber came up beautifully, some varnished boards cleaned up as did a painted door frame. Definitely in the market for one of these but not sure about getting another GMC.
Thank you again for the advice.

If it is not far to the nearest bunnings, I would take it back and get another GMC, so far on the forum a lot have been purchased but only a couple have been faulty. You still will have a 2 year warranty and the H&F/carbatec/ozito/ryobi thicknesser within the price range are all the same, the only difference is warranty lifespan and how much you pay.
regards,
Felixe.

Ring GMC
Mate just ring GMC number in your manual and tell em that the its faulty, as long as you have purchase receipt you should be good. You dont have to go back to bunnings if you want a replacement only if you want your money back.
