    Question GMC SMS250LS Setup

    Hi All,

This is my first post following a month of being an interested and entertained reader of this forum (some interesting comments fly around).

I have been doing some background reading before having a go at sticking some floorboards on to concrete in various areas of the home. So far, I have found a lot of good info on this forum to go with the DIY timber floor laying seminar I have attended here in Perth.

My question relates to the SCMS (GMC SMS250LS) I have just purchased to help complete the job. Now, without starting another GMC bashing thread (I was going for value for money and level of usage or so I thought at the time), have I bought a lemon or what? I have now setup two of these beasties (returned the first one next day), squared everything up only to find that the centre or swivelling section of the saw table sits about 1mm - 2mm higher than the outer fixed sections of the table. As the table clamp positioning, forces timber down on to the fixed section of the table, the piece of timber being cut is raised off the centre section of the table and is not cut square. This I am sure has potential to cause other problems as well. There does not seem to be any method of adjustment other than physically reducing the height of the swivel deck.

Apart from returning the second machine  and trying a third (getting good at squaring the blade, fence and laser now), should I be looking for a refund and buying a better quality machine  - was going to fork out some more dollars for a better blade to cross cut the floor boards with anyhow. If I buy a better machine maybe I'll get the option of a more suitable blade for the job.

In terms of future use for the SCMS, woodworking has always interested me and is something I would like to get into more.

    Cheers

    Hi Freddy
I filed mine down so it sits level, and now it cuts square, it is abit of mucking about but it can be made right. Not bad for the price!

    Hi station-rat,

Thanks for the reply. The option to file the deck down did cross my mind. I am on holiday at the moment so I might give it ago. I agree this GMC gear is not bad value, but a little more QA in the finishing would go a long way.

    Cheers

    G'day Freddy.
Have you considered emailing GMC and telling them of your problem? Who knows they may not be even aware of it, but it has certainly put me off buying one.
I am still saving for a Makita 1013.

    Hi Folks,

Just finished putting this baby back together and everything is nice and level the way it should have been in the first place. Taking it easy with the file it took me about 90mins to get the centre part of the table level with the outer fixed sections. I can now clamp on the left or right and everything stays square for cutting.

Thanks for the tip station-rat - saved me a trip back to the distributor and most likely a few hundred bucks on an upgrade - could have probably conviced the missus on this one though!

Jacksin - Yes, I will email GMC and let them know about this issue. Buying one of their products and having to become part of their production line before it can be used can't be good for business. I will get back with their response if I get one that is.

    Cheers
