    Default Grinder Linisher Combo Recommendation

I have recently come into need for a grinder linisher combo because of my interest in tool making as well as my need to hollow grind plane bevels. Something that can work mostly Ferrous and Non Ferrous metals.

What should I be looking out for in terms of size for the grinder, 6" or 8", HP, and belt size for the linisher. Also I have heard of variable RPM grinders however have not found one in my searching.

Need one that can take jigs.

It must be single phase. It needs to be a combo because of space restraints. Will put on wheels

Is it feasible to add a water bath to a standard grinder or does it need to be a special water proofed motor?

Also can I just purchase a variable speed motor add a grinding wheel on the left and a linisher attachment on the right?

Price is open however under $500 at the most.

Also a question of safety, what kind of lung, ear and eye protection must I use against metal shavings/dust?

    Cheers

    Thumbsucker,
With the specs you have mentioned, I think a tool called a Multitool comes closest to filling most but not all of your needs.

Its recently had a mention in the metal forum.

It can sharpen plane blades and chisels with the kig that is available for it. I can take a grinder wheel but alas not water cooled.

It should come in around $500 .Be aware it is a bolt on to a 6 or 8" grinder and the grinder does not come with it.

    Thanks Grahame

I had a look at the comment in the metal working sections looks like it gets good reviews.

I actually have used a Multitool, and it worked very well. It is nice to get confirmation.

I found a used Abbott & Ashby 200mm(8") Bench Grinder Multitool attachment going cheap on ebay but it is pickup only and it is interstate.

I think this will be the way to go, with a cool grinding wheel.

With an 8" grinder, the linisher attachment, sharpening jig it comes to around $600

Still would like info on variable RPM motors where can you buy such a motor?

Also what about the question of safety? I have heard that metal dust can get into the eyes and cause complications with blood supply to the eyes.
