Jet JDP-17MF - runout and other problems
I just took delivery of one of these.
With the quill fully extended, there is 0.6mm (or 0.02in) worth of wobble at the chuck. Is that acceptable?
When you have the depth stop set, unless you use a very light touch, when you reach the depth stop the chuck jinks left (the direction of the depth stop). Is this just a "feature" of this style of depth stop/brand/model or unacceptable?

Yep, a feature! At least if it is useful for what you need to do. Mine is the same way. I don't consider it a good feature...
There is an slotted screw with a lock nut on the side by the depth stop. It adjusts the amount of play. Unfortunately, mine moves a different direction. I also don't know how well yours will work. If I tighten it much the quill will not move worth a darn, even when lubed.
While mine has not gotten any worse in the several years I have had it, I shold have returned it and gotten a good vintage drill press. Even the Jet DPs I used in the 1960s and 1970s were very good presses.
Take care, Mike

How about the amount of movement at the chuck? Is that about the same as your or is mine a lemon?

I paid more for a Jet because they sell themselves as being a "cut above" the average Chinese bog standard options but I can't say I see that I got much for my money, now.
Another thing: I noticed that while the press is basically very quiet in operation, it had a kind of knocking rumble. I realised that it was the central idler pulley which is a very loose fit in its swivel, and it rattles round as the machine runs. I went back to where I bought it (Gregory Machinery) but all their other stock had the same problem, so it's clearly just crapola quality control.
I wouldn't buy Jet again unless I really wanted the extra quill travel: I am not seeing any quality advantage for the money.
