Jet Planer Fence question
Anyone know what the hell the black plastic covered opening is on the outfeed side of the fence? Can't find any reference to it in the manual, but it must have a purpose!

I'd hazard a guess and say it is a soft bumper for the end of your blade guard to strike. It would return with a soft "thoonk" into the nylon cover rather than belt the heck out of the alloy fence.

Yep that the one that is in the Jet 2006 Woodworking Catalog and the picture says it is a "Non-Marring Fence Insert"

Well that would make a lot of sense, and it sounds like that is the intention, but....
The guard doesn't hit it at all. It impacts the fence just in front of the insert
And when pushing pieces through, they occasionally catch on the far edge of the hole for the insert.
Not happy
Either the engineers who drew up the plans are incompetent, or they changed the design of the guard from the one intended, or they supplied a guard for the normal 6", and there is meant to be a slightly larger one for the 6" longbed.
Thanks for the info - if anyone has a different idea please let me know. This one sounds plausible though - I did think of it, but ruled it out because the guard didn't impact it at all."Clear, Ease Springs"

Maybe it is just a case of metal being more expensive than plastic.

Sounds like a solution looking for a problem to me.
The guard on my Jet is aluminium (I think, either that or mild steel), either way in the years I've owned the machine I've never known the guard to mark the cast iron fence on springback.
Buggered if I know why they'd go to the trouble of including it.

Wish they hadn't. Hasn't solved the non-existant problem, and has created a new one
