Makita saw
Well after much research and looking around I bit the bullet and went to Bunnings in search of a great deal. I had a better price from a competitor for a 184mm saw hoping for bunnings to better the price. At first staff were a bit reluctant as they claimed my better price was not the saw on sale. After a few minutes of poniting out the details on the compliance plate the manager agreed I was correct and agreed to the deal. Only issue was that they had none in stock but was willing to order it in for me and still give me the matched price plus 10% discount.

Well done Bluegum, the Makita is a pretty good bit of gear.
The 184mm is a good choice, I bought a 235mm Makita a couple of years ago but she is a bit on the heavy side.

I've managed to wangle the 235 and the 185.
I like that the 235 cuts thru just about anything and has a dust port (which I finally connected and it works exceptionally well beleive it or not!!). I put a thin kerf bunnies balde with 66 teeth and its very nice - the original blade is in semi retirement for the moment until I need to do some heavy duty ripping - i'm contemplating getting a couple of new hardwood sleepers and ripping a few planks from them jsut to see what sort of timber it is! (what price hardwood sleepers these days in Syd ???)
the 185 also has oodles of power for its size and when I bought it it came with 2 blades with 80 odd teeth so it leaves a lovely finish.
both are incredibly noisy however !!!Zed

We've had the 235 for ages - very good saw. But big and heavy.
Just recently bought a 160mm Makita - lovely little thing - very easy to use. I just wanted a light saw - mainly for cutting up panels. Got a new blade with more teeth too.

Good choice with the Makita. I have had my 1500w 185mm beast for a few years, it has mainly cut up Ironbark poles and other hardwoods. It has started smoking at times, but you just back off for a little while. A good bit of kit!

I am pretty sure my Makita is a 185 big enough to be useful but not heavy enough to hurt you. It has been going now for a few years without a hiccup.
Something I can say for Makita is that they look after their customers. I got a letter a few months after I got mine to say there was a recall. Didn't get around to it, when I did get around to it I missed the workshop. Then another 18 months or so went by and I called them up. I had seen Makitas web site and they were still giving details of the recall with my no longer made model number. Obviously they treat it seriously. Took it in and didn't have a problem with it. The thing that really impressed me is that they apologised in their letter that the saw had a fault that sometimes showed up. (guard sticking up). How often does a company say sorry these days?

Saw
I am pretty happy with the deal as bunings were only to happy to oblige me. I was in need of a new saw after I bought my triton saw a few years back. I gave away my smaller saw to my brother thinking that I wouldn't need one. (yeah right I have learned) I have recently used the same saw on a job site with a mate and found it to be easy and comfortable to use. Bunnings didn't have it in stock when I went in and they orderded it in for me so I pick it up today after work. Now to hint for my need of a SCMS from minister of all things house hold...
