Makita router smoke.
My Makita router 3601b has started to leak smoke after 20 or so years.
Is it worthwhile putting a new armature in or should I just get a new router.

Once the smoke gets out its usually the death knoll. Get a new one and enjoy.

I'm all for putting the smoke back in. They don't make em like they did back in the day. I'd look on on ebay for one to strip for parts.

the 3601b was a great router, how much smoke came out as long as you didnt keep using it the field should be ok, you can also get the armature rewound if you want to save dollars, it should cost between $70-100 to get it rewound, pretty basic router so you should be able to do the repair yourself, new routers around that size go for approx $300+ for industrial brands

The smoke seals on one of my Metabo drills failed once and in order to finish the job I kept using it; and I kept using it for quite a while after that. As the 3601 is a very respectable router I would advise at least determining parts repair/replacement before I considered replacing the whole unit. Have you looked inside?
