Question re electirc motors
Hi,
Long time reader, hanvt posted for a while though...
I have an old pool pump that is about 1.5hp. Its got some decent rev's but doesnt say how fast.. however not knowing how fast it spins is not really an issue and I'd like to run it as a motor for a brass brush wheel and a cloth wheel that has the cloth stitched... (U know the ones? )
anyway it runs counter clockwise and has a clockwise thread on the spindle so it tightens.... I cant identify the thread as I dont have any mechanism for checking it. I want to have some sort of gearing or pulley system to transfer the revs to another spindle that will be the axis for the two wheels. this will be harnessed together using an iron frame bolted together and covered with ply or something to hkeep the moving parts hidden.....
BUT ! I dont know where I can go to get fittings or what would be the best way to have the drive train running ... can someone advise me on where I can go (or who i can go to) to rig something up ? I dont want to spend too much cash - that would defeat the purpose - its just gotta spin 2 wheels at a reasonable rate.
I envisage that the moter will sit in a cradle that have a geared wheel or pulley drive wheel that drives a chain or a belt up to the axes at 90Deg above it ? u know what I mean ?
Where can I go ? who can I go to fore the bits ? what sort of shop ?
Any ideas ?
thanks.
sorry about the speeling but who gives a she-it? right ?

Did you fill in your pool mate? Or are you using it as a rainwater tank?
Can't help you with your query sorry. I bet some of the emgineers on here will give you the drum though.
I'd reckon that belts would have to be the cheapest though. Then it'd just be a matter of using the correct size pulleys.

G'day.
Bearing supply places like CBC & SKF have a range of pulleys & belts & spindle bearings etc...
I built a pedistal bowl lathe out of pulleys, belts & pillowblock bearings from SKF.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

G'day monkey boy, where ya been? Too busy playing Daddy with your delightful offspring?
Hare & Forbes have a lot of pulleys and belts and Carbatec, Timbecon etc have the spindles and bearings, but you will probably get a better range and prices from the places that specialise in bearings. Gasweld also have a stack hanging on their wall.
Good to see you back, Zed
Cheers

Bench mandrel. Such as http://www.grizzly.com/products/sear...bench+mandrels
Check the shops already mentioned for local (+/-) equivalents.

If I wanted stuff like that down here I would check the tip first and then I would go to Candelo market because there are old blokes with box loads of that crap to flog.
I reckon you'll be very lucky indeed to find anything that is just going to screw on. Probably your best bet will be to find something that slips over the shaft and then lock it with a grub screw or something.

Doesn't stop your fellow Victorians in droves from taking up all the parking spaces!
Not sure how common this type of market is in Sydney (where Zed is) but these country ones always have their fair share of blokes with boxes of metal bits and pieces that they've picked up. You can buy gears and pulleys and motors and shafts of all shapes and sizes. The last time I went to a market in Sydney, it was all new stuff, cheap rubbish imported from China. You need a good trash and treasure market.
