Default Which is better for shooting - LA Smoother or Jack

Is the added weight and size of the LA jack an advantage when shooting?

Depends on the size of the workpiece. I was trimming inserts for a small box the other night using a LA block plane. A weightier plane wouldn't have been any better.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them . . . well, I have others.

    LA Block for shooting mice
    LA Smoother for shooting roos
    LA Jack for shooting bulls

I think you get the picture.

The added heft and better registration of the Jack is very helpful when shooting hardwood endgrain. The Jack is also slightly wider than the Smoother, so has a bigger ranger.

While I do use the Smoother on smaller stuff, it is not a hardship to use the Jack. Given a choose of one plane, it would be the Jack.

From the LN website regarding the Iron Mitre Plane which was designed for using with shooting boards.

The 2" x 3/16" thick blade is set in the tool bevel up at 20° with a 25° bevel, making this a very large block plane, with an included cutting angle of 45°.
This plane is also heavy which is consistent with Derek's response.
