    Default like Yeal starting out

I'm in the same position as Yael and just starting out with wood. Makes sense what you've all said about cheaper saws and getting a better quality blade, unfortunately I cant stretch myself righht now to get a better quality makita but I have come across a (new) scms Metabo KGS254 for $400 which sounded pretty good as well as a cms Maktek MT230 for 200. Does anyone have experience with these models or brands?

Have been looking at this one. Had a $500 buy now and I considered it. Now down to $400.

Live a little north of the pick up point but it would suit you to ezzy.

With the stand it looks value. On the other hand it looks old with the slide mechanism in the base. The newer ones seem tos slide above the swivel. . Which is best I wouldn't know. I had a laser guide in mind as well.

    Any opinions on value ?

Cheers Manygeese, with the photos shot backlit its hard to see the unit clearly. I don't know enough to mark a value on it though, Stand is certainly a bonus and there are plenty of posts where people have a positive spin on the LS1013. Anyone know when they first came onto the market?

Has anyone used machinery from the US here?

Makita LS1016 10" Dual Slide Compound Miter Saw (eBay item 200583653473 end time 05-Apr-11 16:51:50 AEST) : Home Garden

A Makita LS1016 with shipping works out to be just over $700. Or would it be better to buy it locally?

Mostly you don't get warranty in Australia with overseas purchases!
    Something to consider.

    Default .

Plus you will need to use a tranformer to get it to operate at 240v.

PS. How much and with who can you get it delivered for that price?

I listed the ebay buyer in my post.

Looks like it won't really be worth it if it needs a step down transformer.

I also need help with purchasing a SCMS. I originally planned on the $299 from bunnings ryobi but I know I will regret not being able to do straight cuts.

My target is $500 and I need to choose between:

Makita LS1018L 10" SCMS - this seems to have dropped to $495
    Bosch #GCM 800 S 216mm SCMS - This one goes for around $550

I was also looking at the makita LS1017L which is mentioned on this forum and available at certain times at Bunnings for $499. As far as I can tell this is not as good as the 1018L which has now dropped to the same price.

I might also see if I can get the Bosch price matched at bunnings as it is $550 at some retailers and $650 at bunnings (less the 10% would make it a $500 saw also).

Will only be used for domestic DIY stuff (not trade) but my OCD demands straight cuts. Any reccomendations as to which of those 2 (or others) would be the best buy?

Bosch is the way to go in my opinion - excellent saw, excellent value, excellent price. As stated, I had a GMC and while it was "possible" to get accurate cuts, setup time was a factor and after all ... it is pretty dumb to buy/make a saw that requires substantial time resetting each time you move the blade. Personally, I am now over getting tools based on price - independent reviews is top of the tree for me, as time is just too limited to muck around.

I figured spending a bit more at this stage would pay off - can't justify the deWalts/Festos though.

Thanks for the advice. The Bosch is only 8" but the Makita is 10" and I am worried that the Bosch might be too small

agree - the issue is that DeWalt costs nearly a grand for a 10 inch and I paid $749 for the Bosch 12 inch which I can't fault. No idea if you guys have TOTAL TOOLS up there but that's where I got mine. I called them for you and here is what I came up with:

    METABO 8 inch - $479 - best-in-class saw apparently.
DEWALT 10 inch - $979 less 10% for two days only - yes, more than 200 dearer than the Bosch
BOSCH 12 inch $749 on special - they have 2 left in Epping VIC store. BTW I nearly paid $1200+ through mitre 10
