Major
That came up just beautiful. I wish it was mine.
I have just been doing my Stanley jointer plane No6 I think and it is taking me ages to lap the sole flat.
May I ask what method you have used for lapping?
Cheers

I've got a piece of float glass that's 12mm thick X 1100mm X 230mm. To start lapping I spray glue 2 lengths of 80 grit sand paper to it & away you go. 80 grit quickly removes all the imperfections. After the 80 I progress through the grades to 400 for the sides & 600 for the sole.
As you can see from the pix this plane still has to be lapped with 600 wet & dry on the sole. I usually wait till I've got a couple to do because it dosen't take long.

Great work, Major. Have a greenie!
You've given me something to aim at when my four new oldies arrive soon. I look forward to seeing progress shots of the refurbishing work on your #8C.

Luvverly. They do come up a treat, don't they?
What finish have you put on the timber?

Superb mate!
That plane came up looking a real treat! Hopefully it works as well as it looks
A number 3 is a bit of an odd man out I find, what would you use it for?
Curious...

I am in awe!
My collection now looks VERY second hand. I've been down to the shed, lined them up, spoken to them severely .... and now I'm waiting for the plane fairy.
Green is the colour of jealousy ... so I'm sending you one (if the greeny fairy will permit)!

Hi MP
Very pretty. Great job.
I would not waste time lapping the sole to 600 - it will just show up all the scratches from any hardwood you plane. I usually stop at 240/360.

In my limited experience I have to agree with Derek. Lapping the sole beyond 360 maybe 400 is pointless other than for display aesthetics. You'll be forever asking yourself, "jeez, how'd I scratch the sole this time?.
Great work though. I reckon refinishing with the enamel looks really neat. I mean if you buy a vintage car you don't leave the old paint on. Do ya?
Tote and knob look really good. Are they original.

I'm curious as to why the #3 (or any plane for that matter) could be considered an "odd man out". Is there a typical usage for each sized bench plane? I know 6/7 can be used as jointers. 8's for planing wide surfaces but other than that its about as far as my knowledge extends.
Your thoughts cobber?:confused:If you never made a mistake, you never made anything!
