Default Time to buy new toys

Well the woodworking show is approaching fast and the tax man was very kind to me this year so its time to buy some new toys.

First 2 things on my list are a Jet thicknesser and Jointer.
I am looking at the JWP-160S

has anyone used one of these? for a 16" thicknesser it seems like a very good price or would i be better off getting the JET*JPM-13CS combinatinon thicknesser moulder

Get the JWP-160S or the similar one from Hare & Forbes. Worth a look anyway.

I recently went down this track. I purchased a 15 Carbatec (motor under job) cause it was cheaper and has solid cast lead in and tail out tables. The Jet like the Sherwoods with their flimsey rolls did not impress me.

Don't buy a thicknesser with the motor mounted on the moving head! I have a 15" which has seen many miles of timber go through it with the top mounted motor. The head finally gets out of parallel with the base & it's a ***** to adjust (all the time).
I'll be buying a new thicknesser soon & it will be a bottom mounted motor version. Just a word of experience
    Cheers

I used to own a Jet 13" moulder/thicknesser which I subsequently traded it in for a Jet 15" thicknesser. Not sure about the latest models, but my 13" model did not have a lower roller, and for thicknessing rough timber it would never feed very well. For narrow boards and for thicknessing boards that had been planed already then it was generally OK. I'm quite happy with my 15" thicknesser. The only issue I have with it is that even with the locking screws tight it is not uncommon to have the table drift lower during thicknessing.

i would love to get the 15" machine but it costs almost $1k more than the 13" one and i also want to get an 8" jointer and maybe a spindle moulder if funds permit.

Maybe i shall look at a different brand of thicknesser then.
The jointer i am looking at is the carbatec 8" which seems like very good value for money.

Can anybody also recommend a good quality thicknesser and jointer and if possible post a link of it.

Thanks again for all the replies

    Hi Major,

So what specific models of thicknesser are you considering?

    G'day Numbat!

I'm looking for a thicknesser of about 20". I'd really like to get a recent (5 year old or so) SCM 3 phase without the motor-driven table elevation & change it single phase. I'm really after a single post table elevation version.
If all else fails Carba-Tec's 20" model will do after it's been torn down & put back together properly. It's the only 20" on the market with cast iron extension tables @ the moment.
    Cheers
