Triton router fine adjustment problem
Rapt with my new Triton router but one of its best features— the micro adjuster—has packed up on me. Won't rotate clockwise to increase depth of cut. Yes, locking lever is off and handle winder is in unlocked position. It sounds like the micro adjuster is slipping on a cog/ratchet and that cog/ratchet sounds like it is made of plastic. Not ideal. Has anyone has similar problem and been able to remedy it without putting router in for service? (Router is under warranty but I'm a long way from service agents.)

Hi Rusty,
I assume that it's making a "clicking" kind of sound, and moving up a little then slipping back down again? Yes, as you say, this would usually be because it's locked or the winders are in the wrong "mode".
The only thing I can think is that it could (a) be at maximum depth (I assume not); (b) the depth stop could be locked (you didn't mention the depth stop...); or (c) the router itself could be getting caught or stuck on something preventing the movement.
Does it move in the other direction properly? Does the clicking happen all the way through the adjustment, or just when you get to more deep cut levels?

No - I won't bill you for reading this.

Yes it is making a clicking sound. Depth stop is not locked. No it is not at maximum depth. It turns counterclockwise no worries to reduce cut depth , but wont turn clockwise to raise the base (and increase cut depth) at all. It works okay when I remove the spring, so is just struggling with the tension.

Thanks DJ and Scorch
Reading those links it seems it is a common problem, and basically unfixable. For a not cheap router, that adds up to crap design from Triton. Hope a Triton rep reads this.Rusty

A fix???
On re-reading the amazing instructions from rayintheuk on dismantling the router I gather he has 'repaired' the micro adjuster by replacing a part:
You may be able to see traces of wear on the worm shaft.
Replacing it (part number TRA036) completely refurbished the micro adjusting mechanism.
I may have missed something, but hasn't he replaced the faulty part with an identical part? And if so, won't the problem reoccur? (My micro mechanism packed up after being used just two or three times.)Rusty

If you are using the router in a table the return spring must be removed before you use it,see Stuarts blog about this,I was meaning my router only cost $35 to get fixed. The adjustment mechanism was worn on one side(its only plastic)supposed to be replaced with a metal one, that never happened.

Thanks for the explanation Pheonix. I don't recommend anyone else does this, but I have removed the spring for normal use of the router above the table. With the spring out the micro adjuster works fine. Needless to say I will NEVER be using the router in rapid plunge mode with this arrangement, and only very carefully in wind mode. A safer arrangement would be to shorten the spring to reduce it's pressure—the entire problem as I see it stems from the spring pressure being too great for the plastic microadjuster mechanism—but I won't do this while the router is under warranty, though I will look for a shorter spring.

There are thousands of them out there and I don't see that too many of the owners are stepping forward to report the same problem. I have had no problem with mine.
If you use it out of the table without the spring, apart from the danger to you and your project, you are probably compromising the warranty anyway.
