    Question Good value?

    G'day everyone.

Although I increasingly tend towards the darker side of things, I found it impossible to pass up a GMC Sliding Compound Mitre Saw (MS 256) from my local Bunnies.

This is a single-rail model with 2000w motor and 40-tooth blade. Also has the Redeye feature. It has been superseded by a new model with twin rails.

I do occasional mitre cuts (some on wide boards), and thought this saw was probably good value at the clearance price of $169. They still have about 10 of them left.

But what do you think? Is this a good price for a weekend warrior saw?

Do any of you have this saw? What sorts of issues (besides the blade) should I watch for? Has anyone had issues with the slide?

I expect there will be some adjustments to be made (to the positive stops, to the laser guide etc.). I know you don't tend to have these issues with more expensive saws.

Those who simply want to pooh-pooh GMC, pls don't do it here. We are all aware of these perennial discussions which mostly degenerate into tit-for-tat. On the other hand, if you've had this saw and have had real issues with it, then by all means, let's hear it. Or maybe you've had a fantastic experience with it. Whatever.

Cheers -- look fwd to your feedback.

Mine works fine so no regrets. Of course I would have prefered a nice 2 rail one but for the cost it's perfect for what I'm doing. No major inaccuracies noted as yet.

I got the 2-rail GMC SCMS and have no complaints, other than it makes me want to get a good table saw so I can cut bigger pieces of wood.

The price for yours is pretty good.

Make sure it's bolted down securely otherwise it may/will tip towards you when doing a full cut.

No, this is the 'good' one that gathers spiderwebs because I'm too lazy to carry it out of the solar kiln and put it back at the end of a sawdust day. I got this one, oh, about a year ago. Great to use, but I find I reach for my handsaw and router more because I've been doing mainly small stuff in the last few months, so the handsaw has been fine.

    Cheers
