Black wattle
I've just found a few fallen Black Wattle (Acacia Mearnsii) trees. One of which is pictured below.
I've been advised to quartersaw these logs when I mill them as they tend to crack otherwise, although my first thought was to slab them. These trees have been dead for a couple of years.
Any thoughts from anyone who's milled this species before as to sizes to cut into; quartersaw, backsaw, slab?

neale,i'd slab them purely for the fact of even if you cut them into boards ,back or quarter sawn, they'll move and crack anyway. if you slab them at say 60mm you shouldn't have too much trouble recovering a 40mm slab that can be used for signage or whatever that needs a lot of character.

I've cut some with my Lucas. Very hard stuff and you need plenty of water. There also will probably be plenty of tension so expect heaps of movement. Looks like yours might have some grubs. Good luck.

Never heard of anyone cutting that species up, but always wondered why. Book says it is similar to sally wattle (blackwood) which is a great compliment. Very keen to see how you go with it. Looks like good size compared to what I have seen. Not a long lived species, thats as big as it gets I reckon.

Yeah, you're right, that is pretty much the bigger you ever find of Black Wattle. We have lots of it growing in this area, and obviously I've got a few cubic meters of it. The only one that I come across and that has enough trunk size and length (straight) for some proper slabs, is still up-right, dead and getting eaten by those big timber borers. This tree is only about 500 meters away from me but, he wants it cut and the area cleaned up but every time I'm available or feel with enough energy to do it, he's never available to be there as he requested!
I also can tell you that I can find a few variants of the Black Wattle, there is, is a Black Wattle but depending where it grows, if has some differences, more noticeable when the timber is sliced open. Beautiful timber to work green, but really hard when it dries totally.
Good luck with it!
PS: Strap your slabs when you done cutting them! (3 straps, ends and middle, at least).
Cheers

Took down a Mt nardi (near nimbin) Black wattle about 15 yrs ago ,about 1.5 + dia a real monster ,branches like your trunk, paid for it to be slabbed, bloke hated me for it,spent more time sharpenin than cuttin,Lot of silica me thinks.Tried makin lots of things ,it warped ,cracked ,bent and twisted its way out of everything. Shame ,cause its a nice coloured and figurated grain, brown ,dark chocolate and white.Even the white sapwood is hard as .Should be renamed KRYPTONITE .but perseverance pays of ,used some as cetre pieces in tables ,seems the smaller the less problems. And now the last is goin into pen blanks .good luck and keep a sharpenin stone handy.

Willbrook.
Absolutely gorgeous pieces out of the log.
Any chance of a close up photo of the steel log holding brackets you have?
They look like a great idea.
