Default Buying an Alaskan chainsaw mill

Can anyone recommend somewhere to purchase an alaskan mill?
I found some vendors in the US and with the aussie dollar so high it can be attaractive, but I've never dealt with importing goods before.
    Thanks
    Dave

    Default Welcome

Hi Dave. Welcome to the forum.
I just bought a Granberg mini mill from the US and saved a fair bit too.

Chainsaws, Outdoor Power Equipment and Tree Care Supplies from Bailey's

Thats the site I went to. They have Alaskan mills on there too. Worth a look.

    Thanks

I agree with Rob, Bailey's are very good to deal with.

Unless you use USPS the shipping will cost an arm and a leg. The problem with ordering an alaksan from overseas and using USPS is the length of the mill rails - USPS have a length limit of 40"

One way around this is to buy the shortest mill (30 or 36") and then buy the rails locally. A 6m! length of ally rail to suit will only cost around $100.

If you are handy they are are not difficult to make yourself.

Thanks mate, my worry is about customs and GST costs.
I'd like to buy a mini mill + MK III - 24". I know the freight is around US$130.
Were you required to pay customs and GST for your mill?

    There won't be any customs.

There will only be GST if it (plus shipping) is above AUS$1000

    See Aust Customs rules about buying stuff over the internet;
    When buying over the internet

There may be GST payable if multiple packages of more than $1000 are delivered to the same person.

If you are after alaskan mills Cannings are the importers speak to John On (03) 98828245
or look em up on the web. Griffiths and Beerens also manufacture a similar system. They are at 42 berkshire rd Nth Sunshine Victoria. Dont have their number But if you talk to weisyboy on this forum he can supply you with the plans for an alaskan style mill and also very good plans for a rail mill. His first name is carl. if he cant help you I will. I am making a rail at the moment. Don't waste your money buying one you can make a better one cheaper. Talk to Carl.

Hi Dave, I have an old jig for a chainsaw mill I'll never use again since I got the Woodmizer: matter of fact I have the Stihl 30" bar and chain I modified to suit for ripping as well. Painful memories of standing about up to my hocks in cedar chips, crying 'cos we couldn't put them back together again! Photos too! And you have to push the b--tard!
It's an Oregon Jig as I recall - let me know if you're interested and I'll dust it off for you.

Talk to sawchain about the big bars he is on Ebay as sawchain404, and yes there is a 72" bar I am led to believe. Remember if you wish to mill 72 inches you really need about another 4 inches of bar to allow for where the mill will attach to the bar at each end.

To make a rail mill to suit what you want you would be probably looking about $250 for materials (maybe a little less) plus your Time to make it. An Alaskan should be less than this in materials.

    Default Chainsaw mill

    Hi Dave,
I have an old jig for a 30inch bar, have the bar for a Stihl too in fact, and the chain I modified to rip with. I'll never use it again since I got the Woodmizer.
[Scary memories of standing about in cedar chips up to our hocks moaning 'cos we lost so much timber....still it got milled.]
If you're interested I can dust it off for you. And show you how to use it too. It all works ok.

    best,

    richie

Actually offered it to Dave first so if he declines it can be yours, no wuckers. That's only fair. and you'll be able to have the remainder of the blade too, if you want.
