Eastern Red Cedar milling in Arkansas
Was only intending to change the oil in my 10HP bandsaw mill motor yesterday. But when I got outside, I couldn't think of going back in without doing something! So I finished up that leftover chunk of Pignut Hickory(no photo's taken), and then decided that I just had to have another bunch of ERC slabs to make some pen blanks for the future cut up(okay, I like the smell of Eastern Red Cedar in the shop).
Here's a group shot of the pieces I got to cut up(then I ran out of gas):
(the larger chunks-on the wide ends....those measure at 18" across or 457.2mm)
(all were cut to 1" thickness or 25.4mm)
And a few close-up's('eye-candy' if you will):
The colors were still really fresh from the cutting, and had some excellent hues and tones. Yes, most of those hues and tones will sort of 'disappear' during the next few weeks while drying....too bad.
Had fun, made some slabs/boards, and then got to clean up. What more could a fella ask for?
Thanks for looking at some of the stuff from my side of the pond....as I get to enjoy the stuff I see ya'll cutting over there(it almost makes me want to move to your fine country and cut logs)!!
Scott (had to get the log furthest from the mill, did ya) B

Eastern Red Cedar milling in Arkansas
That is some super looking cedar. Bet your yard smells good when you are milling those slabs.

Yes, they are bright when 'freshly cut', but they do mellow a bit while drying....the bright pink just turns pink, that purple-ish coloring mostly goes away, but the yellow stays(go figure?)
As far as the yard smelling good, it might have if the winds weren't blowing 7-12mph all day....at least it was blowing in a 'good' direction. The dust from the 'chute' was blowing away from me! Those pink colored boogers ain't no fun!
