Default putting holes in fence posts

i thought this might be one of the better places to put this. i need to build a post and rail fence with the rails being mortised into the posts. i have heard of bars for chainsaws being made to be able to do this or an attachment that fits on the bar and clamps to the post to stop kickback. if anyone has any ideas,i'd be glad to hear them. regards andrew

    Thanks for that Sneddan's link.

I do not come into this section that often now, but when I do I always come away with the help I need.

Thanks again to Bob and the rest of you for giving of your valuable time. It is really appreciated.

old bloke I knew who used to do a fair bit of fencing used to put wire holes through his posts with a .303 that he had sawn off would just stick the muzzle against the post and "BANG instant hole!
I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

I know a fella who converted a drill press to take five or six bars bolted together and then plunged it into a post for post and rail fences

In my little mountain village, TRC Cedar Products makes post&rail fencing which they send off to market in km-long trains. The holes in the posts appear to have been made with 3 or 4 drillings with something like a Forstner bit, then shaved sort of smooth. The rails have milled ends to match, no idea how that's done.
This is Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata). Most logs are rotten in the core, leaving a wood "shell" some 10-12cm thick. They cut to length then crush the logs, sort out the chunks and resplit as necessary. While the process seems ridiculously simple, not a trick to try with hard woods.
