    Default Stihl 660

    Morning All
I know a person who is considering purchasing an 660 from Hawaii this year and bringing it back to Australia.
I spoke to a stihl dealer and he told me of a few potential problems
    1. Void the warranty
    2. Different carburettor and differing models
    3. Possible different fuel mix

Anyone had any experience doing this or comments to offer?
    Cheers
    Willy

The 660 you buy in aus is the 660 magnum it has the dual port muffler as standard and has 5.7 kw output, the american is only 5.2kw which is the standard 660. aside from that there are a few other minor differences. the fuel mix will be the same, not sure of the carby but you will have issues when you go to get spares as stihl have listings of all of the saws sold in australia and if the numbers do not match what was sold in australia questions are asked. WARRANTY is voided for the same reason, however these are not too big a problem as most parts are available aftermarket including big bore kits etc.

Personally I looked at it but at the end of the day I got nearly as good a deal buying one in australia for effectively a better saw with a 36 inch bar and chain and 2 years warranty, free tank of fuel and lube, a big bottle of chain lube (4 or 5 litres what ever it was, gone now.) a litre of genuine stihl/castrol 2 stroke oil, and the first service free. all this and the knowledge that if something goes wrong I can get it fixed!!!! All up it probably cost me about $150 more than it would have for the 5.2kw model from the states without backup.

I honestly didn't think it was worth the hassle and bought mine here.
I am told that sharpening handsaws is a dying art.... this must mean I am an artisan.

Get your handsaws sharpened properly to the highest possible standard, the only way they should be done, BY HAND, BY ME!!! I only accept perfection in any saw I sharpen.

There is a high output oiler supposedly only available in australia but that is an option even in australia and adds roughly $35 to the price. so far I have found the standard oiler sufficient on mine but I know people who have had issues with it not oiling properly and being left with half a tank of oil after a tank of fuel. I advise anyone if they have this problem to take your saw back to your dealer.

If you take any advice from my experience I'll never buy a saw from overseas I did originally wonder why I didn't go down that path until the crankshaft on my ms660 shat itself!! If I had no warranty I'd almost be up for a new saw. The savings on an overseas saw dosent meet the cost of repairs that warranty should cover!!!

That's the chance you take with buying overseas. The warranty is a bit like an insurance policy. They are both active from the moment you purchase. Buy here and you are covered from day one.

Buy overseas and you effectively accept liability. It's your choice.
